Lindos With Children: Beaches and Boats
Lindos suits families who like beaches, boats and a short history lesson, though the steps, the heat and the car-free lanes need some planning. This page lists what works with children, what to skip and how to handle the climb.
Lindos Main Beach
Lindos Main Beach is the easiest place for children. It is organised, with sunbeds for hire, and the seabed is described as shelving gently, which helps with small swimmers. It lies on the village side, so you can walk back for lunch without a car. Pallas Beach is nearby along the same bay front. Keep children in the shade in the middle of the day and use hats and sunscreen.
St Paul’s Bay
St Paul’s Bay is pretty, but it is a small, almost enclosed bay where most of the entry is over rock. Children and adults should wear water shoes, since sea urchins are common on Aegean rock. Check the flags and conditions before anyone swims, and watch for the afternoon meltemi wind. Tambakio, the beach restaurant on the bay, is a handy stop for lunch.
Glass-bottom boat
The Melani glass-bottom boat sails from the bay to Paul’s Bay, the Navarone cliffs and the caves, and children can watch the sea floor from the hull. Ask the operator about the length of the trip when you book, and bring hats and water.
The Acropolis with children
The Acropolis is a good outing for older children who can climb. The route is a steep climb up stepped lanes and polished stone, a few hundred steps in all, and it takes 10 to 25 minutes. There is no lift or cable car, no shade at the top and no way up for pushchairs, and there are drops at the edges of the site, so hold hands near walls. Slippery stone means closed shoes, not sandals. Admission is about €20 for a full adult ticket and about €10 reduced, with timed entry, and it is free for EU citizens under 25 and non-EU visitors under 18 with ID. Check hhticket.gr for prices and opening times. Go early, when the stone is cool.
Donkeys
Working donkeys carry visitors on the lower part of the climb. They work in the heat, and welfare groups criticise the practice in summer, so donkey rides are not recommended for children. Walking up together is the better choice.
A water park day
The island’s water park, Faliraki WaterPark, is about 35 km north of Lindos on the east coast. It is a full-day outing and suits older children. Check current prices on the park’s own channels.
Getting around with a family
Lindos is car-free inside the lanes, so you park at the edge of the village and walk in. A shuttle links the car parks with the village. Bags and strollers are awkward on the stepped lanes, so travel light. The KTEL bus from Rhodes Town costs €5.50 one way and stops at Krana Square; buses fill in July and August, so check ktelrodou.gr . A rooftop family dinner at Mavrikos, a restaurant run by one family since 1933, is easier with a booking in high season.
Wildfire risk is high across the countryside from April to October. The UK government advice says to follow local guidance and the 112 alerts. For a boat or kayak day, browse family boat trips from Lindos .
