A 3-Day M'Zab Valley Itinerary
Three days is enough to see the five ksour of the M’Zab Valley at an easy pace, with time for the market and the palm groves. This plan flies in from Algiers, stays in or near Ghardaïa and keeps every day short enough to avoid the midday heat. Swap days around to suit guide availability.
Before you go
Ghardaïa is not covered by the Great South visa-on-arrival measure, so apply for a visa in advance through an Algerian consulate. Air Algérie flies from Algiers to Ghardaïa (GHA) in about 1 hour 20 minutes. About 12 flights a week were shown in early 2026, so book early and allow for delays. The road trip is about 600 km, roughly 8 to 10 hours by bus or 6 to 8 hours by car. Do not add Tassili n’Ajjer or the Hoggar to this plan, since both are more than 1,000 km away.
Money is in Algerian dinars (DZD). The official rate in October 2026 was about 150 to 152 DZD per euro. Cash is the main way to pay, and cards are accepted in few places, so change enough at official outlets before you travel into the valley.
Day 1: Ghardaïa and Melika
Arrive, settle in and spend the afternoon at the arcaded market square below the old town of Ghardaïa. Then go up to Melika, a hilltop ksar on a ridge beside a large cemetery of whitewashed graves. Visit in good light, treat the cemetery respectfully and take a taxi back, since taxis are needed after dark.
Day 2: Beni Isguen and El Atteuf
Start at the guides’ office near the East Gate of Beni Isguen for a guided walk. Visits are guided only, with no smoking inside the walls, no photographs of residents and modest dress. Hours vary, so go in the morning or afternoon. If you can, stay for the late-afternoon auction in the market square, asking your guide about timing. Spend the remaining time in El Atteuf, the oldest ksar at about 1012, and see the Sidi Brahim mosque from outside unless your guide says otherwise.
Day 3: Palm groves, then Metlili or Zelfana
Spend the morning in the oasis with a guide. In the afternoon you can add Metlili, about 40 to 45 km south, or Zelfana, about 65 to 67 km east, where the thermal pools sit. Then fly back to Algiers.
Where to sleep
Non-Muslims cannot stay overnight inside the walls of Beni Isguen, so base yourself in Ghardaïa or in a traditional guesthouse in the palm groves. Check availability and conditions directly before you book. Alcohol is not available in the valley.
Weather and safety
Plan the trip between October and April. Summer is extremely hot and winter nights can approach freezing. Carry photo ID for checkpoints, and leave drones and binoculars at home unless you have authorisation. Check UK FCDO guidance again before you fly. Look at hotels in Ghardaïa for places to stay, and read the Routard notes on Beni Isguen before you go.
