Day Trips to Geghard from Yerevan
Travel advice, as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Geghard, in Kotayk Province, is outside both. Current wording is on gov.uk .
Yerevan to Geghard
Geghard lies about 37 to 40 km east of Yerevan. The route runs roughly 31 km on the H3 and then 2 to 3 km on Geghard Monastery Road. A taxi takes about 40 to 50 minutes. The usual approach passes Charents Arch, goes through Garni and climbs the valley to the monastery. Geghard is open year-round, and early morning is the quietest time to arrive. Summer is hot in the gorge, and winter weather can close the road down to the Symphony of the Stones.
By marshrutka
Marshrutka 284 to Goght and marshrutka 266 to Garni leave from the Gai bus station in Yerevan’s Nor Nork district. Goght is the last stop on the 284 and sits about 3.8 km from the monastery, so the monastery itself has no bus. Reported fares are about 250 AMD for a ride of about an hour, with departures every 30 to 40 minutes when the van fills. One blog quoting the timetable lists the 284 to Goght at 11:11, 12:11 and 12:59, with return buses from Goght at 9:00, 13:30, 14:20, 15:50 and 19:30 for about 100 AMD. Treat all of these as approximate and confirm on t-armenia.com or at the station. From Goght you can walk for about an hour, hitch or take a taxi.
The Garni pairing
Garni is the essential companion stop, about 10 km and a 15 to 20 minute drive back down the valley. It holds a 1st-century colonnaded temple and the Symphony of the Stones in the gorge below. For a taxi between Garni and Geghard, agree the price and the waiting time before you set off.
Longer days from Geghard
- Lake Sevan and Sevanavank. About 84 km by road to Sevan town, around 1 hour 15 minutes, plus a little more to the peninsula. Private operators list Geghard and Sevan together as a 7 to 8 hour day.
- Khor Virap and the Azat Reservoir. These appear in operator itineraries alongside Garni and Geghard. Khor Virap stands beside the closed border with Turkey, and Mount Ararat across it is in Turkey.
- Tsaghkadzor and Kecharis. Operators also combine these with Garni and Geghard.
A sample day
Leave Yerevan by 9:00, stop at Charents Arch for the view of Ararat on a clear day, walk the rock-cut churches at Geghard first, then drive down to Garni for the temple and the gorge. Finish with a lavash baking class or lunch in the village. The standard circuit takes 5 to 6 hours with a tour.
Money and manners
Geghard Monastery is free, with parking about 200 AMD. Carry cash for parking, roadside stalls and the booth at the Symphony of the Stones. The monastery is active, so cover shoulders and knees and keep your voice low.
