Day Trips in Crete by Base Town
Crete is 260 km long, so a good day trip starts from the right base. A trip that takes two hours from one town takes five from another, and the mountain roads are slow. The lists below are grouped by where you are staying. Prices are in euros, and wildfire risk is high from April to October, so check local fire alerts and weather closures in summer.
From Chania or Kissamos
Samaria Gorge is the hardest day on the list and takes 12 to 14 hours door to door. The trailhead at Xyloskalo is about 42 km south of Chania, and the coach takes roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45. The walk is about 16 km and drops about 1,200 m over loose stone, which usually means five to seven hours. At Agia Roumeli there is no road, so you take a boat to Sougia or Chora Sfakion and then a bus back, and the last boat leaves in the late afternoon. Leave Chania around 06:15 or 07:00, wear ankle-supporting boots, and carry plenty of water. The season runs roughly 1 May to 31 October and the park can close at short notice for rain or heat. Check the official portal before you go. The gorge is too far east to reach from Agios Nikolaos or Sitia in a day.
Elafonisi is about 76 km from Chania and takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes by road. The area is protected, so leave sand, shells and plants where they are and keep out of the roped dunes. Entry is free, parking is about EUR 3 to 5 at a car park roughly 500 to 600 m above the beach, and sunbeds are rented on the mainland side. The inner lagoon is calm and shallow, while the open sea beyond it is not. A seasonal KTEL bus runs from June to September, so check times on e-ktel.com .
Balos lagoon and Gramvousa take a full day. Drive about 40 km to Kissamos port, roughly 45 minutes, and join a day boat, or take the unpaved track of 8 to 9 km from Kaliviani and walk the last 20 to 30 minutes downhill. The climb back takes 30 to 45 minutes.
From Heraklion or Rethymno
Knossos and the Archaeological Museum work as one day. City bus line 2 reaches the palace in about 20 minutes. Rethymno is about 1 hour 15 minutes away by KTEL bus. From Chania it is 2 hours 30 minutes or more each way, which makes it a poor day trip. Spend the morning at Knossos, take the bus into the centre for lunch, and spend the afternoon in the cooler museum. Each site has its own ticket.
Preveli beach lies about 35 km south of Rethymno, a drive of about 45 minutes through Kourtaliotiko Gorge. A stone stairway of 300 to 450 steps leads down to the palm-lined river mouth, and it takes 15 to 40 minutes down and longer back up. Boats from Plakias also serve the beach in season for about EUR 12 to 18 return.
From Agios Nikolaos
Spinalonga fits well here. Elounda is about 12 km away and Plaka about 16 km. Take the short crossing, allow one and a half to two hours on the island, then have lunch back in Plaka. Island entry is EUR 20 full or EUR 10 reduced, and the boat is extra.
The Lasithi Plateau sits about 45 km west of Agios Nikolaos at roughly 850 m. Its windmills, the village of Krasi and the Dikteon Cave make a full day. The cave costs EUR 15 or EUR 8, opens 08:30 to 15:30 and is closed on Tuesdays. It reopened on 29 May 2026 after two years shut, so check before you promise it to anyone.
Trips that are too much for one day
Santorini is sold as a day trip from Heraklion by fast ferry, about 1.5 to 2 hours each way in summer, which leaves only four or five rushed hours there in the midday heat. Save it for an overnight stay. Chrissi island off the south coast may restrict landing, so check the rules before booking.
