Day Trips From La Fortuna
Where a day trip can take you
La Fortuna works well as a base for full days out. The two classic options are the blue river of Rio Celeste and the wetlands of Cano Negro, and a third is a slow drive around Lake Arenal. Each is easy to book through a local operator or to do with a rental car.
Rio Celeste, Tenorio Volcano National Park
Rio Celeste is about 1.5 to 2 hours from La Fortuna by road. The park charges about $12 for adults and $5 for children aged 2 to 12, plus IVA, and entry needs an online reservation through the national park system. Parking is about CRC 2,000.
Swimming inside the park is prohibited. A free public spot lies about 1 km past the entrance by the bridge. Trail sections can be closed for repairs, so check the current status before you drive out. Wear closed shoes with good grip.
Cano Negro boat safari
A full-day Cano Negro tour takes about 8 to 9 hours. It starts with a drive of about 1.5 hours to Los Chiles, then about 2 hours on the Rio Frio by boat. Tours cost about $65 to $100 depending on the operator, and park admission is usually included.
This is a watching trip. Birdlife and caiman are possible but never guaranteed, so treat any sighting as a bonus. Do not feed or touch wildlife, and keep your hands inside the boat.
Lake Arenal by road
Route 142 around the lake is paved, though it has potholes, and it takes about 1.5 hours from La Fortuna to Nuevo Arenal. Allow extra time for photo stops, and drive in daylight. Lake Arenal is a reservoir, with the volcano as its backdrop to the east.
The Monteverde transfer
Monteverde is a transfer, not a day trip. The taxi-boat-taxi route takes about 3 hours door to door, with a boat crossing of Lake Arenal of about 45 minutes from La Represa to Rio Chiquito. Shared fares are about $25 to $35 one way, and private transfers cost much more. Driving takes about 3.5 to 4 hours via routes 142, 145 and 606, which are mostly paved with some rough sections.
Practical tips
- Leave nothing in a parked car, especially at roadside stops.
- Start early, as most tours leave in the morning and several parks have last entry in mid-afternoon.
- Pack a rain jacket, insect repellent, water and closed shoes.
- Prices and trail status change, so confirm with the operator or park.
