Romantic Stays in the M'Zab Valley
The M’Zab Valley suits couples who like quiet places, long walks and honest scenery. It does not offer champagne, wine bars or candlelit rooftops. Alcohol is not sold or served in the valley, and the ksour are living religious communities rather than a backdrop for staged photographs. What it can offer is slow time together in a desert oasis, with warm evenings and clear skies. This is a short page, because the romance here is simple.
A palm-grove guesthouse
Traditional guesthouses in the palm groves are the most atmospheric places to stay, with courtyards, shade and the sound of irrigation channels. Standards, prices and availability vary, so contact a guesthouse directly or check an accommodation site before you book. Ghardaïa itself has more conventional hotels if you prefer a fixed address with reliable services.
Sunset on the Melika ridge
Melika is a hilltop ksar on a ridge, with a large cemetery of whitewashed graves below. The ridge is a good spot for sunset, when the limestone changes colour and the valley goes quiet. Treat the cemetery as a place of mourning, keep voices low and avoid posing for pictures among the graves.
Stargazing in the desert
On clear nights the sky over the northern Sahara is dark and full of stars, and winter evenings are very cold, so pack warm layers. Arrange any night excursion through a local agency, and ask your agency about current conditions before you head out of town. Drones and some optical equipment need official authorisation, so leave telescopes and binoculars at home unless you have a permit.
Respectful behaviour for couples
Public displays of affection are out of place in the ksour. Dress modestly, with long sleeves and a scarf in your bag. Women are advised to carry a headscarf for religious areas. In Beni Isguen, visits are guided only, residents must not be photographed and smoking is banned inside the walls. Non-Muslims are reported to be barred from staying overnight inside the walls.
When to go
October to April is the comfortable season. Summers are extremely hot, often above 40 to 45 degrees C, so a summer trip is not a romantic one. Fly Air Algérie from Algiers to Ghardaïa in about 1 hour 20 minutes, and apply for a visa in advance, since Ghardaïa is not covered by the visa-on-arrival list.
Read the UK FCDO advice before you plan, and look at places to stay in Ghardaïa when you are ready. For a gentler start to the trip, the OPVM site explains how the valley’s heritage is managed.
