Family Days Out Near Kazungula
Families visiting Kazungula get the best days from boats, vehicles and well-worn trails, where children can watch big animals from a safe distance. Kasane, in Botswana about 8 km west of the Kazungula Bridge, is the usual base. Choose activities where the adults stay in control of distance from the animals, and leave the walking to places with a proper path.
A Chobe river cruise
A cruise is the easiest family outing in the area. You sit in a boat for about three hours, and elephants, hippos, crocodiles and birds come to the bank to drink. Boats keep their distance from hippos. Morning trips often leave around 9:00 to 9:30. Ask each operator about minimum ages for small children.
Child park fees
Chobe National Park charges children aged 8 to 17 about BWP 135 a day, and children under 8 are free, from April 2026. Adults pay about BWP 270 a day. These are the international rates, so confirm them with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. Fees are normally payable at Sedudu Gate in cash.
Game drive in an open vehicle
Afternoon drives commonly run from about 3:00 to 6:00 pm, which is a long time for a restless child. Bring water, hats and a snack. Lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are the usual sightings, and rhino are essentially absent. If the vehicle meets an elephant on the road, the guide stops and keeps back, and passengers stay seated and quiet.
A day at Victoria Falls
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, on the Zambian side, has trails that suit most ages. The Falls are about 80 km from the bridge, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter by road each way. In the wet season the spray is heavy, so pack rain jackets and a dry bag for phones.
Mukuni Village
Mukuni is a working Leya village about 7 km from the Falls, in Zambia, with a curio market. It is an easy, short stop that suits children who have had enough of vehicles.
Health and safety
Chobe District is a malaria area, and the risk peaks in the wet season from about November to April. Ask a doctor about antimalarials for every child before you travel. Never let children go near the Zambezi or Chobe banks, since crocodiles and hippos live in both. Do not swim in either river. Walk only on marked trails or with a licensed guide. Skip elephant rides and lion encounters, which harm the animals. Take normal precautions and follow the wildlife rules.
Border crossings with children
Every day trip that mixes Chobe and the Falls crosses a border, so pack passports for everyone. Zambia asks for six months of validity and two blank pages, and Botswana for six months and three blank pages. The KAZA UniVisa, at US$50, covers day trips into Botswana for nationalities that need a Zambian visa. Check the current entry rules before you travel.
