Day Trip to Shakhrisabz from Samarkand
Shakhrisabz is itself the day trip. Samarkand is the usual base, and the town has few worthwhile excursions of its own. This page covers the standard trip from Samarkand first, then the handful of stops around Shakhrisabz and the trips that do not work as day trips.
Samarkand to Shakhrisabz
The town lies about 80 to 90 km south of Samarkand, over the Takhtakaracha Pass at roughly 1,650 m. Allow about two hours each way by road in normal conditions. A full day is realistic: three to four hours of driving plus three to four hours on site. That is enough for Ak-Saray, Dorut Tilavat, Dorus Saodat and the Chorsu bazaar, with a short break for tandir gosht at a teahouse.
Hire a private car, join a group tour or arrange a shared taxi. Agree the price before you leave and expect to pay in cash. One operator sells a private day tour at about USD 105, with entry tickets extra, and site tickets run at around 40,000 UZS each (about USD 3).
The pass in winter
The Takhtakaracha section of the M-39 closes temporarily after heavy snow or ice. News reports record closures in December 2021, January 2022, January 2024 and December 2024. From December to February, check conditions the day before and have a fallback plan for Samarkand.
Takhtakaracha Pass stop
The pass itself is a mountain-scenery stop on the road, and many tours halt at a viewpoint on the way back. It adds only a short break to the day.
Kitab State Geological Reserve
This protected reserve covers 5,378 ha and was established in 1979 in Kitab district, about 45 km east of Kitab city. Its Zinzilban section holds the global reference point for the base of the Devonian Emsian stage, chosen in 1989 and ratified in 1996, so geologists know it well. A 2019 report said it would open to tourists after years of access limited to scientists. Arrange a visit through a local operator or the reserve office, reportedly in Shakhrisabz, and do not count on a drop-in visit.
Hisorak Reservoir
Hisorak is a Soviet-era reservoir on the Oqsuv river near Miroqi village, about 35 km from Shakhrisabz. Tourism there has only been proposed, so do not plan a day around it.
Trips that do not work
Tashkent is a long way from Shakhrisabz. The weekend Afrosiyob, running Fridays to Sundays since 27 March 2026, makes a same-day return possible but leaves little time at the monuments, so it is not a day trip in practice. Khujand, in Tajikistan, is across an international border. If you want more than one day, see the page on multi-day trips .
Practical notes
Bring cash in Uzbek som (UZS), roughly 12,000 to 13,000 UZS to the US dollar. UK citizens can visit visa-free for up to 30 days, and hotels normally register guests within the required 3 days. Details are on the FCDO entry requirements page . Train timetables are on eticket.railway.uz . Day tours from Samarkand can be compared on Viator .
