Day Trips from Puerto Ayora
Day trips from Puerto Ayora fall into three kinds: boat days to uninhabited islands, a speedboat crossing to Isabela, and half-day outings on Santa Cruz itself. Every landing on an uninhabited island is guide-only and needs a licensed operator, so you book a tour rather than turning up at the dock. Paying the park entry fee on arrival (currently USD 200 for most foreign adults, in cash) is separate from the cost of any day trip.
Boat days to nearby islands
North Seymour. A licensed yacht with a naturalist guide takes you to a landing known for frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. Keep 2 m from the birds and do not use flash.
Bartolomé. This is a long boat ride, and the visit is guide-only. The island is known for Pinnacle Rock and for penguins. Ask the operator how much walking is involved.
South Plaza. A small island with yellow land iguanas and sesuvium ground cover.
Santa Fe. A visit here offers endemic land iguanas and snorkelling bays. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and skip single-use plastics, which are not allowed into protected areas.
Operators set their own itineraries and prices, so compare what each includes, such as snorkel gear, lunch and the guide, before you book.
Isabela by speedboat
Fast boats run from Puerto Ayora to Isabela in about 2 hours, with fares of roughly USD 25 to 35 each way. Departures are reported around 07:00 and 14:00, so confirm at the dock. Arrive 30 minutes early for the luggage inspection. The crossing is in an open-sea speedboat and can be rough, so seasickness tablets are sensible. Isabela charges non-nationals a separate visitor fee of about USD 10.
Two hours each way makes Isabela tight as a same-day trip. An overnight stay is the more realistic plan, and the page on multi-day trips covers that option.
Half-day trips on Santa Cruz
Tortuga Bay. Walk the 2.5 km paved path from the edge of town in 30 to 45 minutes, and sign in and out at the park booth. Playa Brava, the first beach, has rip currents and no swimming. Playa Mansa, about 20 minutes further on, has calm water. Visiting hours run about 06:00 to 18:00, and the park may close the beach when the sea is rough.
The highlands. El Chato and Rancho Primicias are 30 to 45 minutes’ drive from town and open roughly 08:00 to 17:30. Entry is about USD 10 with a guide, and booking ahead is not needed.
Practical notes
Check current government advice before you travel. The islands sit outside the mainland areas named in UK advice for Ecuador . Carry small US dollar bills for taxis and entry.
