Day Trips from Midoun, Djerba
Midoun is on Djerba Island, so island day trips need no ferry and rarely more than 30 minutes in a taxi. Mainland trips cross either the El Kantara causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry. Midoun is about 500 km by road from Tunis, so the useful day trips stay on the island or head south and west across the causeway.
Houmt Souk and the port
Houmt Souk, the island’s main town, is about 16 km from Midoun by road. Plan on the Borj El Kebir fortress, the souk lanes and the fishing port, where boats and cafes line the water. Allow half a day. Fees and hours for the fortress vary, so check on arrival. The Sidi Zitouni museum of popular arts and traditions keeps erratic hours, so treat it as a bonus.
Erriadh loop
Erriadh lies roughly 15 km west of Midoun. Spend the morning walking the village lanes to see the Djerbahood murals, about 250 works by more than 150 artists, which are free to view. El Ghriba is a working synagogue and pilgrimage site in the same village. Visitors go through a security check and need passport or ID, and the site stays solemn and quiet. Opening hours change, so ask locally.
Guellala pottery
Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west of Midoun, is the island’s pottery village. Workshops sell clay pieces, and a hilltop museum covers local crafts. Fees and hours change, so ask at the door.
Ras Rmel boat day
Boats to Ras Rmel, called Flamingo Island, leave from the Houmt Souk fishing port, and the sail takes about an hour. Lunch is served on board. Flamingos appear in the cooler months, around October to May, but sightings are not guaranteed.
Mainland 4x4 days
Operators run guided 4x4 days from Djerba to the Tataouine region, taking in Chenini, Matmata and Toujane. The route leaves the island by the El Kantara causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry. The ferry takes about 30 minutes including transfers, runs roughly hourly and is free for foot passengers. The FCDO warning along the Libya border excludes Zarzis and Médenine Governorate north of the C118 road, but your itinerary should stay away from Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba. Journey times vary, so ask the operator for the full timetable and use a licensed company.
