Sightseeing Around Midoun
Midoun is a market town on the east side of Djerba Island, and most of the island’s sights lie within a taxi ride of it. Medieval mosques, village murals, a museum of crafts and a pottery village make a varied list. The island itself is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, inscribed in 2023 as “Djerba: Testimony to a settlement pattern in an island territory”. The listing reflects a dispersed pattern of settlement from the 9th to the 18th centuries, shaped by water scarcity. Read the full entry on the UNESCO page .
Lalla Hadria Museum
The museum sits inside Djerba Explore at Ras Taguermess. Its 15 galleries cover about 3,000 square metres, with ceramics, calligraphy, costume, jewellery and carpets from the 7th to the early 20th century. Allow an unhurried visit. The museum zone is open 09:00 to 17:00, and the heritage village next door stays open until 22:00. Adult tickets are about 32 to 37 TND, and the single ticket includes areas this guide does not recommend.
Mosquée Fadhloun
The mosque stands in Khazroun in north-east Djerba, on the road between Houmt Souk and Midoun. It dates to the 14th century. The complex includes Qur’anic school rooms, a grain mill and a bakery from the 19th century. It opens 07:00 to 12:00 between March and November and 08:00 to 12:00 from December to February. It is closed all day on Friday. Non-residents pay 5 TND. The interior can be shut when the grounds are open, so treat the exterior and courtyards as the main interest. The heritage agency’s page on Fadhloun lists the current hours.
Djerbahood, Erriadh
Erriadh, roughly 15 km west of Midoun, is home to Djerbahood, an open-air project of about 250 murals by more than 150 artists from around 30 countries. It ran in 2014 and again in 2021. The walk is free. Some of the murals have weathered.
El Ghriba synagogue
El Ghriba, also in Erriadh, is an active synagogue and a place of pilgrimage. Visit with respect and treat it as a place of worship, not an attraction to rush through. An armed attack outside it on 9 May 2023 killed three security personnel and two civilians, and an earlier truck bombing in 2002 killed about 20 people. Expect a security check at the entrance, and carry a passport or ID. Dress modestly and bring your own head covering, as scarves and kippot are not always provided. Entry is free, and a donation is customary. Opening hours change, so confirm them locally.
Houmt Souk
Houmt Souk, about 16 km north-west of Midoun, has the Borj El Kebir fortress, the souk and the fishing port. The Sidi Zitouni museum of popular arts and traditions is also here, though its hours are erratic. Fees and hours at the fortress change, so ask on arrival.
Guellala
Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west of Midoun, is a pottery village with a hilltop museum. Check workshop and museum hours locally.
Taguermess lighthouse
The lighthouse at Ras Taguermess stands about 45 to 49 metres tall. Photograph it from the grounds, since access inside is inconsistent.
