Walking Around Midoun and Erriadh
Midoun is a market town on the east side of Djerba Island, not a walled medina, so there is no single old-town circuit to follow. Walking here means picking a few areas where on-foot exploring pays off, and using a taxi to move between them. Distances between the areas run to roughly 15 to 22 km, which is too far to walk.
Midoun market streets
The best walk in town itself is through the central market streets on market day. Stalls fill the lanes, and a slow loop takes in produce, household goods and the cafes around the centre. Market days and opening times change, so ask at your hotel or in a shop before you go. Midoun is a working town, so expect traffic alongside the stalls.
Erriadh and the Djerbahood lanes
Erriadh lies roughly 15 km west of Midoun. Its lanes carry Djerbahood, an open-air collection of about 250 murals by more than 150 artists from around 30 countries, painted in the 2014 and 2021 editions. It is free to walk, and no ticket or guide is required. Some murals have weathered, so expect a mix of fresh and faded work. A local guide can add the village’s background.
The same village holds El Ghriba, an active synagogue and a pilgrimage site. Treat it as a place of worship rather than a stop on a photo walk. Visitors pass through a security check and need passport or ID. Dress modestly, bring your own head covering, and keep voices low. Opening hours change, so ask locally.
Houmt Souk, the souk and the port
Houmt Souk, about 16 km north-west of Midoun, is the island’s main town and the best place for an urban stroll. The souk lanes lead toward the Borj El Kebir fortress, and the fishing port is the departure point for boat trips to Ras Rmel. Fees and hours at the fortress vary. The Sidi Zitouni museum of popular arts and traditions sits in the town, with erratic opening times.
Guellala village
Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west of Midoun, is the island’s pottery village. A short walk between workshops and the hilltop museum suits a relaxed morning. Check hours locally.
What walking tours are like here
Organised walking tours are limited. An Erriadh visit with a local guide is the most useful format, and the half-day heritage loop by taxi adds short walks at each stop. The island is flat, with a maximum elevation of about 53 m at Guellala, so gradients are never a problem. Heat is the limit instead.
Tips for walkers
- Walk early or late. Midday heat in summer makes long outings unwise.
- Carry water and a hat.
- Wear shoes that cope with sand and uneven paving in the village lanes.
- Mosquée Fadhloun, on the road between Houmt Souk and Midoun, is a fortified rural mosque from the 14th century. It opens in the mornings only and is closed all day on Friday.
