Multi-Day Trips from Midoun
Midoun is on Djerba Island, so a multi-day trip here means either staying on the island and exploring it slowly or heading to the mainland by the El Kantara causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry. The ferry takes about 30 minutes including transfers, runs roughly hourly and is free for foot passengers. Midoun is about 500 km by road from Tunis, so a trip north toward the capital is a separate journey rather than an add-on.
Southern Tunisia loop, 2 to 3 nights
The usual long loop is run as a guided 4x4 trip. Stops include Matmata, Ksar Ghilane, Chenini and Tataouine, Douz and Tozeur. Operators set the order and the journey times, and prices depend on group size and season, so ask for the day-by-day plan and the total cost in writing. Use licensed operators. Read the FCDO map before you book. The FCDO warns against travel in a band along the Libya border, including Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba, and it excludes Zarzis and Médenine Governorate north of the C118 road. A sensible itinerary stays away from that border band entirely.
Short mainland overnight
If you have less time, ask operators about a single overnight in Matmata or around Tataouine. One night away suits travellers who want a taste of the south without committing to the full loop.
Island stay
Djerba rewards a slower plan. Base yourself in or near Midoun and spend each day on one area:
- Houmt Souk, about 16 km away, for Borj El Kebir, the souk and the fishing port.
- Erriadh, roughly 15 km west, for the Djerbahood murals.
- Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west, for pottery workshops and a hilltop museum.
- The east-coast beaches near the tourist zone, with care about flags and supervision.
Add Djerba Explore at Ras Taguermess for the Lalla Hadria museum and the heritage village. Adult tickets are about 32 to 37 TND, and the museum zone closes at 17:00. In 2023 UNESCO inscribed “Djerba: Testimony to a settlement pattern in an island territory”, a dispersed pattern of settlement from the 9th to the 18th centuries shaped by water scarcity. Walking between villages gives a sense of that pattern.
Where to stay
In Erriadh you can stay at Dar Bibine or Dar Dhiafa. The Hasdrubal Prestige Thalassa and Spa and the Radisson Blu Palace Resort and Thalasso both lie in the Mezraia and Sidi Mahrez area rather than in Midoun town. Prices depend on season and board type.
Practicalities
- Currency is the Tunisian dinar (TND), with three decimals.
- The Fadhloun mosque, on the Houmt Souk road, is closed all day Friday.
- Tunisia is Level 2 on the US State Department scale, and the FCDO lists tourist and religious sites among higher-risk places for terrorism.
