Family Days Out in Midoun, Djerba
Djerba is a flat island, so getting between family stops is easy, and most of them are a taxi ride from Midoun. Midoun is in Médenine Governorate, in southeast Tunisia, and prices here are in Tunisian dinars (TND). Summer midday heat is strong, so plan outings for the morning or late afternoon and carry water and sun cover.
Djerba Explore museum and village
Djerba Explore at Ras Taguermess is the easiest all-weather family stop. The Lalla Hadria museum has 15 galleries of ceramics, costume, jewellery and carpets, and the heritage village sits beside it. Children aged 4 to 12 pay about 24 TND, under-4s are free, and adults pay roughly 32 to 37 TND. The museum and heritage zones run 09:00 to 17:00, while the village stays open from 08:00 to 22:00, which makes an evening visit possible. The ticket also covers a crocodile area, and this guide suggests spending your time in the museum and village instead. Check current prices on the park’s practical information page .
Ras Rmel boat trip
Boats to Ras Rmel, known as Flamingo Island, leave from the Houmt Souk fishing port, about 16 km from Midoun. The sail is about an hour each way, and lunch is served aboard. Flamingos are seasonal. They are likeliest in the cooler months, around October to May, and sightings are not guaranteed. Bring hats, sunscreen and snacks for younger children.
Beaches in the tourist zone
The beaches of the Zone Touristique, near Sidi Mahrez, are where most families swim. Some beaches use a flag system, so learn what each colour means before you go in. Supervise children closely even where a lifeguard is present, and ask locally when you find no lifeguards, flags or signs. Do not assume any particular beach has calm or shallow water.
Djerbahood for older children
Erriadh, roughly 15 km west of Midoun, has the Djerbahood street-art project: around 250 murals by more than 150 artists from about 30 countries, painted in the 2014 and 2021 editions. The walk is free and suits school-age children who like colour and photography. Some murals have weathered. Keep the visit to the mural streets, with children close by.
Pottery at Guellala
Guellala, roughly 22 km south-west of Midoun, is the island’s pottery village. Workshops there demonstrate how clay is shaped, and children often enjoy watching. A hilltop museum covers local crafts. Ask about fees and hours on arrival.
Practical tips
- Taxis are the simplest way to link stops, and a driver can wait while you visit.
- Kitesurfing lessons are for older children and teenagers. The north-east lagoon is flat and shallow, and schools such as KiteWorldWide Kitecenter Djerba, Kite Aventure and Les Dauphins teach there.
- If you rent a quad, adults and children alike need helmets, as standards differ.
- The FCDO lists no Djerba-specific warning, and its Tunisia advice is worth reading before you travel.
