Things to Do in Midoun, Djerba
Midoun sits on the east side of Djerba Island in Médenine Governorate, in southeast Tunisia, roughly 500 km by road from Tunis. You are already on the island, so no ferry is needed to reach the town. Prices below are in Tunisian dinars (TND), which have three decimals, so you will see tickets written as 37.000.
Djerba Explore, Ras Taguermess
Djerba Explore pairs the Lalla Hadria museum with a heritage village. The museum has 15 galleries covering about 3,000 square metres, with pieces from the 7th to the early 20th century: ceramics, calligraphy, costume, jewellery and carpets. The park’s practical-info page lists an adult ticket at 37 TND and a child ticket (ages 4 to 12) at 24 TND, with under-4s free. Adult prices have also been listed at 32.5 TND, so budget about 32 to 37 TND and check at the gate. The museum zone is open 09:00 to 17:00 and the village 08:00 to 22:00. The single ticket also covers a crocodile area, which this guide does not recommend visiting. The Djerba Explore practical information page has the current figures.
Mosquée Fadhloun, Khazroun
Fadhloun is a fortified rural mosque dating to the 14th century, on the road between Houmt Souk and Midoun. The grounds include Qur’anic school rooms, plus a grain mill and bakery from the 19th century. Opening hours are 07:00 to 12:00 from 1 March to 30 November and 08:00 to 12:00 from 1 December to 28 February. It is closed all day on Friday. Entry is 5 TND for non-residents and 4 TND for residents. The interior can be shut even when the grounds are open. Dress modestly.
Kitesurfing in the lagoon
The north-east shore has a flat, shallow lagoon that suits learners. Schools on the island include KiteWorldWide Kitecenter Djerba, Kite Aventure and Les Dauphins. Ask each school for current lesson prices and the best months, because rates and wind seasons vary.
Golf near Midoun
Djerba Golf Club lies in the Midoun tourist zone. It has 27 holes in three nines, Les Acacias, La Mer and Les Palmiers, designed by Hawtree and opened in 1995. Ask the club for green fees and tee times.
Taguermess lighthouse
The lighthouse at Ras Taguermess stands about 45 to 49 metres tall. Visit the grounds and photograph it from outside, since access to the interior is inconsistent.
Markets and villages
Midoun is a market town, and market days bring stalls of produce and household goods into the centre. Check locally for the days and times. From Midoun, Erriadh is roughly 15 km west, Houmt Souk about 16 km north-west and the pottery village of Guellala roughly 22 km south-west.
Safety notes
Tunisia is rated Level 2 by the US State Department, and the UK FCDO lists religious sites and tourist sites among higher-risk places for terrorism. Djerba itself is not named in the FCDO’s regional warnings. Some beaches use a flag system, so ask locally when you find no flags, lifeguards or signs, and supervise children even where a lifeguard is present. If you hire a quad, wear a helmet, because standards differ between operators.
