Åndalsnes Gondola, Ridge Hikes and Climbing
Åndalsnes sits at the head of the Romsdalsfjord, where the Rauma river reaches the water below the Romsdal Alps. Most of the best things to do start within a few minutes of the railway station. Prices are in Norwegian krone (NOK), and cards or phone payment are accepted almost everywhere.
Romsdalsgondolen up Nesaksla
The gondola station is directly across the street from the railway station, on the fjord side. The ride to the top station at 708 m takes about 5 to 7 minutes, and each cabin holds 35 people. Eggen restaurant at the top serves meals with the view over fjord, river and peaks. An adult return ticket costs roughly NOK 460 to 625 depending on the season, and child fares for ages 6 to 17 are lower. The gondola runs all year, but hours vary by date, so check romsdalen.no before you go.
Rampestreken viewpoint
A steel viewing platform at 537 m juts out over the valley. You can climb up from town on Romsdalstrappa, a stone staircase built by Nepalese Sherpas, which takes about 1.5 hours. From the top gondola station it is a walk of about 15 minutes downhill. The platform is open year-round, queues form in summer, and crampons help when the path is icy. Deep snow can make it unreachable.
Romsdalseggen ridge
This is the classic hike: about 10 km, 970 m of ascent and 5 to 8 hours on the trail, with a high point of 1,329 m. The season runs from mid-June to early October. Take the Romsdalseggen bus from Åndalsnes to the start at Venjesdalen, about 20 minutes on NOR-WAY Bussekspress. Book ahead, because the bus can be cancelled in bad weather. You finish on foot in Åndalsnes or ride the gondola down from Nesaksla. Expect some scrambling and airy sections, and weather that turns cold fast. The FjordNorway route page has the details.
Via ferrata
Romsdalsstigen via ferrata starts from Norsk Tindesenter. Introveggen is grade B, takes 3 to 4 hours and has a minimum age of 12. Vestveggen is grade D, takes 5 to 6 hours, climbs to the summit of Nesaksla and has a minimum age of 16. Prices start from about NOK 1,675 for Vestveggen. Tours run from about 1 June to 20 October, and a guide is recommended.
Climbing wall and museum
Norsk Tindesenter, at Havnegata 2, houses Norsk Tindemuseum and a climbing wall with 60 routes and 20 top anchors. It is Norway’s second-highest indoor climbing wall. There is also a shop, the Tindestua restaurant and a visitor centre for Reinheimen National Park. Entry is from about NOK 90.
Rauma Line train ride
The Rauma Line runs 114 km from Åndalsnes to Dombås, with regular trains taking about 1 hour 17 minutes. It runs all year and crosses the Kylling Bridge, a stone arch 59 m above the river.
Safety and gear
Ridge hikes and via ferrata are serious mountain activities. Bring mountain boots, waterproof and warm layers, and an offline map. If you do not know the area, a local guide is a good idea, and people with a strong fear of heights should skip these routes.
