Using Matara as a South Coast Base
Matara works best as a base for several nights rather than as a stop on a set circuit. It is a practical base on the south coast with a rail line, an expressway and a string of beaches and temples within easy reach. This page sets out how to stay several nights and cover the coast in day runs, and where the longer wildlife trips fit in. Prices are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), and cash helps for tuk-tuks and small shops. Check the current UK government travel advice for Sri Lanka before you go.
A base rather than a circuit
Three to five nights in Matara is enough to see the town and take short trips in both directions. West of town lie Mirissa, about 12 km away, and Galle Fort, roughly 40 km away. East lie Dickwella, with Wevurukannala Vihara and the surf bay at Hiriketiya, then the beaches around Tangalle. Mix a town day with a coast day, and keep the beach days for the calmer sea season, roughly November to April. In the south-west monsoon, from about May to October, the sea is rough and many boats and water activities stop.
Getting there and around by rail
The coastal railway runs from Colombo Fort through Galle and Matara to Beliatta. The Matara to Beliatta extension, about 26.8 km with four new stations, opened on 8 April 2019, so Beliatta is now the end of the line and not Matara. Colombo Fort to Matara takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on the service, and named trains such as Ruhunu Kumari and Galu Kumari appear in the timetable. Galle to Matara by train is about an hour. Galle is a terminus, so trains reverse there. The coastal line article on Wikipedia lists the history of the line.
Getting there and around by road
The Southern Expressway (E01) opened between Galle and Matara on 15 March 2014 and between Matara and Hambantota on 23 February 2020. Colombo to Matara is about 1.5 to 2 hours by expressway. Kapuduwa, Aparekka and Beliatta are interchanges on the extension. Fuel quotas may affect hired cars and tuk-tuks, so agree the fare before you set off. The E01 expressway article on Wikipedia covers the route.
Where the wildlife parks fit
Udawalawe, Yala and Bundala are separate multi-hour trips from the south coast, not relaxed add-ons. If you want a safari, give it a block of its own and move your base nearer the park for a night, instead of squeezing it into a day from Matara.
A sample shape for four nights
- Days 1 and 2: Matara town, the Star Fort, Weherahena and Polhena in calm-sea months.
- Day 3: Mirissa whale boats in season, leaving about 06:00, then an afternoon on the beach.
- Day 4: Galle Fort by train, or east to Dickwella.
