Romantic Evenings in Nouakchott
Advisory, October 2026: The US State Department rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel in several regions while giving no warning for Nouakchott. Canada asks visitors to avoid unpatrolled beaches. Read the FCDO warnings before choosing a trip.
Nouakchott is an Islamic republic with no resorts, no licensed bars and no nightlife scene. Romance here is quiet: tea poured over charcoal, a long dinner in a shaded courtyard, an afternoon among paintings. Public affection is not accepted, including hand-holding and kissing, and unmarried foreign couples should be discreet. Mauritanian couples who are unmarried cannot share a hotel room.
Sunset tea in the dunes
The dunes begin just outside the city. A private afternoon drive with a local driver, arranged through your hotel or a local agency, can end with carpets laid on the sand, the sun going down and a three-glass ataye made over hot coals. Agree the price for the vehicle in advance and be back before dark. Because Canada advises avoiding unpatrolled beaches, because of banditry and carjacking, let the driver choose the spot and keep to inland dunes.
Courtyard dinner in Tevragh-Zeina
Tevragh-Zeina is the quietest district, with embassies, leafy streets and modern guesthouses. Restaurant Le Prince serves Lebanese grills, fresh juices and pastries, and the terraces of city hotels are an option for grilled fish and mint tea. There is no wine list: alcohol is illegal throughout the country. Call ahead, as opening patterns vary and cash is the usual payment.
Galerie Zeinart
Galerie Zeinart, at Ilot C in Tevragh-Zeina, was founded by Isabel Fiadeiro and shows contemporary Mauritanian painters, sculptors and artisans in a garden setting. It is a calm afternoon stop for two. See its website for current exhibitions.
A longer escape
For a trip with more space, the Banc d’Arguin park is reached by 4x4 along the coast and has a tradition of sailing on wooden lanches with Imraguen fishermen. Plan two or three days, pay the entry fee at the park offices, and hire a local guide who knows the tides. October to March is the best season. The Routard guide to Iwik describes the track.
Customs for couples
- Dress modestly. Men should avoid shorts, and women should cover shoulders, arms and legs.
- Sunbathing in swimwear on urban beaches invites harassment or police attention.
- Do not swim at Port de Pêche or the open beaches. The undertow is strong and drownings occur every year.
