Romantic Evenings in Port Louis
A city for evenings, not beaches
Port Louis is a working harbour capital, so romance here is urban: a waterfront at sunset, a table for two, a show and a long lunch on a Creole veranda. There are no beach dinners in the city and no boat or water activities in the harbour. Couples who want a beach stay should look to the north and west coasts, such as Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches and Flic en Flac. Le Saint Geran is a resort on the Belle Mare peninsula on the east coast, not a Port Louis restaurant.
Four date ideas
Sunset at Le Caudan Waterfront
Le Caudan Waterfront is the part of the city that stays lively after dark. Walk the harbour promenade, then pick a waterfront restaurant for dinner and drinks. Most of the centre winds down by about 17:00 to 18:00, but the waterfront restaurants and cinema run later.
A show at the Caudan Arts Centre
The Caudan Arts Centre opened in December 2018 and seats about 430. Check its programme for performances on the dates you are in town.
Veranda lunch at Maison Eureka
Maison Eureka in Moka is a 19th century Creole house with a restaurant. Fees and opening days vary between guides, with Sundays in doubt, so check before you set off.
Dinner at Chateau de Labourdonnais
The Chateau de Labourdonnais estate at Mapou is in the north, about 15 to 30 minutes by road. Confirm opening hours, menus and prices with the estate before you book a table.
Shaping the day around the evening
Spend the morning on easy, shared sights and keep the evening for the table. The Blue Penny Museum at Caudan is open Monday to Saturday from 09:30 to 16:00, and the 1847 stamps are lit for 10 minutes at quarter past each hour. Odysseo Oceanarium is a short taxi ride away. Both fit a leisurely afternoon, and you can be on the waterfront by sunset.
Where to stay
Port Louis has city hotels for a short stop. For a longer romantic trip, split the time with a beach coast. The north coast around Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches and the west coast around Flic en Flac are tens of minutes away by car, and Belle Mare is on the east coast.
Making the evening work
- Take a taxi to and from your dinner. Government advice says not to walk alone at night in poorly lit areas, especially the backstreets of the business district.
- Carry cash in Mauritian rupees for taxis and small purchases.
- Keep daytime plans for the morning, since the heat builds and the city closes early.
