How Long to Stay in Port Louis
One to two days is enough
Port Louis is a good base for one to two days, not a week. The capital has a compact set of museums, a market, a waterfront and two memorial sites, and there are no beaches in the city. Anyone planning a longer trip to Mauritius should split the time between the capital and a beach coast.
Day one: the city
- Morning: start early at the Central Market for dholl puri, then walk to Chinatown. Offices and stalls wind down by about 17:00 to 18:00 on weekdays, so keep the city sights for the morning and early afternoon.
- Midday: visit Aapravasi Ghat on Quay Street, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a memorial to indentured labourers who arrived from India from 1834. Confirm opening hours with the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund before you travel. The Intercontinental Slavery Museum is nearby, and you should check its hours and any fee first.
- Afternoon: go to Le Caudan Waterfront. The Blue Penny Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 09:30 to 16:00, and the 1847 stamps are lit for 10 minutes at quarter past each hour. Odysseo Oceanarium is a short taxi ride away and is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:15.
- Evening: stay at Caudan, where restaurants and the cinema open later than the rest of the city.
Day two: Pamplemousses
Take a taxi or car to Pamplemousses, about 15 to 25 minutes north. Combine the SSR Botanical Garden, with its giant water lilies and tortoises, with L’Aventure du Sucre next door. The sugar museum is closed on Sundays and runs Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00. Buses to the north leave from the northern bus station at Immigration Square.
Sundays and race days
Most of the centre is quiet on Sunday, and the Blue Penny Museum and L’Aventure du Sucre are shut. Caudan Waterfront stays open. During the racing season, which runs from 25 April to about late November, a Saturday or Sunday meeting at Champ de Mars can fill a day. Check the Mauritius Turf Club for dates.
Where to find a beach
Beach stays belong to the coasts rather than the capital:
- North: Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches.
- West: Flic en Flac and Le Morne.
- East: Belle Mare.
Le Morne is a UNESCO site and a place of memory for escaped slaves, about 50 km from Port Louis and one to 1.5 hours by road. Treat it as a separate trip.
Getting around and staying safe
The Metro Express runs from Port-Louis Victoria to Curepipe, daily from 06:00 to 19:00. Outside Caudan, nights are quiet. Government advice warns about poorly lit areas, especially the backstreets of the business district, so take a taxi after dark. Cyclone season runs from about November to May, so build a spare day into any trip then.
