The M’Zab Valley was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 (reference 188, criteria ii, iii and v). It protects five fortified towns, called ksour, built on a limestone plateau in the northern Sahara and founded between about 1012 and the mid-1300s. The valley’s heritage is managed by the Office de Protection et de Promotion de la Vallée du M’Zab (OPVM). The ksour are living religious communities, so sightseeing here is quiet and respectful.

Walking is the best way to see the M’Zab Valley, and most of its old centres are traversed on foot. The lanes are stepped and shaded by arches, the distances are short and the ksour are packed tightly on their hills. The M’Zab Valley suits couples who like quiet places, long walks and honest scenery. It does not offer champagne, wine bars or candlelit rooftops. Alcohol is not sold or served in the valley, and the ksour are living religious communities rather than a backdrop for staged photographs. What it can offer is slow time together in a desert oasis, with warm evenings and clear skies. This is a short page, because the romance here is simple.

Three days is enough to see the five ksour of the M’Zab Valley at an easy pace, with time for the market and the palm groves. This plan flies in from Algiers, stays in or near Ghardaïa and keeps every day short enough to avoid the midday heat. Swap days around to suit guide availability. Before you go Ghardaïa is not covered by the Great South visa-on-arrival measure, so apply for a visa in advance through an Algerian consulate.

Day trips from Ghardaïa are limited. The town sits in a hyper-arid corner of the northern Sahara, and the most worthwhile outings are short oasis and spa excursions rather than a long list of attractions. Most of the best sightseeing, the five ksour of the M’Zab, lies inside the valley itself and is covered on the sightseeing and walking pages. The excursions below are the realistic options beyond the valley. Distances are approximate and come from secondary sources.

The M’Zab Valley is a cultural destination, not a playground, and family trips here work best with older children who enjoy walking and watching. The valley has no zoo, no amusement park and no water park. What it offers is a market, an oasis and a thermal station, all within a few kilometres or a short drive of Ghardaïa. This page covers the gentle options and the rules that apply to families.

The M’Zab Valley is a living religious and residential landscape, and the most rewarding way to see it is with a local guide. Guided visits are the norm in the old centres, they keep you on the right side of local etiquette, and a good guide explains what the lanes, arches and palm groves are for. Tours here are quiet and on foot, and most last a morning or an afternoon.

Travel advisory (October 2026): The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 30 km of Algeria’s borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger, and in parts of the Tunisian border region. It rates the terrorism threat in Algeria as likely, higher in the south and the Sahara, and says kidnap risk is concentrated in remote desert and border areas. The US government urges increased caution and warns against remote Sahara travel without an organised tour.
