Perth Day Trips 7 Day Itinerary
Seven days is our 6-day plan , Rottnest, Fremantle, Swan Valley, the Pinnacles, Rockingham and a first Margaret River overnight, plus a seventh day that finishes Margaret River properly and drives back to Perth. This is the only length in this family with real time to do Margaret River justice rather than a rushed one-night stopover.

Day 1: Rottnest Island

Day 2: Fremantle

Day 3: Swan Valley
25 minutes northeast by car, 4-5 cellar doors (swanvalley.com.au has a cellar-door map). Full detail in our 3-day plan .
Day 4: The Pinnacles Desert
190km/2 hours north to Nambung National Park’s limestone pillars. Full detail in our 4-day plan .
Day 5: Rockingham and the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park
45 minutes south for a dolphin-and-sea-lion cruise, since Penguin Island’s own jetty remains closed (check status at penguinisland.com.au ). Full detail in our 5-day plan .
Day 6: Margaret River, night one
Drive down or join a 2-day tour, check into your overnight stay, and work through 2-3 cellar doors on arrival afternoon (margaretriver.com has a cellar-door and cave-tour list). Full detail on why this needs to be an overnight, not a rushed round trip, is in our 6-day plan .
Day 7: Margaret River’s second day, then the drive back to Perth
Spend the morning on whichever half of the region you skipped on arrival day: the Leeuwin-Naturaliste cave system (Mammoth Cave is the best-known of the 6 open to the public) if you did wine first, or 2-3 more cellar doors if you did caves. Surfers should detour to a lookout at Main Break or check conditions before adding a session, this coastline is rated among the country’s best and it’s worth seeing even if you’re not paddling out. Leave Margaret River by early-to-mid afternoon for the 270-280km/3h15+ drive back to Perth, with Busselton Jetty as a worthwhile 30-minute stop if you left on schedule. Return your rental and get an early night, this is the longest single driving day of the whole trip.
Is 2 full days actually enough in Margaret River?
Enough to do it properly rather than rushed, yes, though genuine wine-and-cave enthusiasts could easily spend 3-4. Two days covers a real split between wine and caves or coast, which is the whole point of treating this as an overnight instead of a single desperate day trip.
Should you fly out of Busselton instead of driving back to Perth?
Only if your next stop genuinely isn’t Perth. Busselton Margaret River Airport runs limited regional routes that change seasonally, and if your international or interstate flight home departs from Perth, the drive back is still the simpler plan; check current routes directly before counting on a regional flight replacing it.
Book your final Perth-bound fuel stop in Bunbury rather than pushing straight through, the drive is long enough after 2 wine-region days that a proper break matters.
