Perth Day Trips 6 Day Itinerary
Six days is our 5-day plan , Rottnest, Fremantle, Swan Valley, the Pinnacles and Rockingham, plus a sixth day that finally does Margaret River properly: as the overnight it needs, not the rushed single-day round trip tour operators sell. Day 1: Rottnest Island

Day 2: Fremantle

Day 6: Margaret River, done as the overnight it actually is
Leave Perth by mid-morning for the 270-280km/3h15+ drive south, or join a 2-day tour if you’d rather not drive it yourself. You’ll arrive early afternoon with real time for 2-3 cellar doors, out of the 100-plus on offer in WA’s premier wine region, before checking into an overnight stay in Margaret River town or nearby Dunsborough. This is the day this itinerary stops being a series of day trips and becomes a short road trip, book your overnight accommodation before you leave Perth, not on arrival, since the region’s better small wineries and stays fill up on weekends. margaretriver.com has a current cellar-door and cave-tour list if you’re planning your own route.
Why does this itinerary end overnight in Margaret River instead of driving back to Perth?
Because driving back the same night defeats the entire point of coming. The region has 100-plus cellar doors, a genuine cave system (Mammoth Cave among the 6 open to the public), and coastline surfers travel internationally for; a rushed there-and-back day gets you 2-3 hours on the ground for a 6-plus-hour round trip. If your trip is exactly 6 days and your flight leaves Perth that evening, do the Pinnacles or a second Fremantle day instead and save Margaret River for a return visit with an actual overnight.
Should you swap Margaret River for Wave Rock instead?
Only if red desert granite appeals more than wine and surf. Wave Rock, near Hyden, is roughly 296-340km/3.5-4h east, a similar 2-day commitment for a single striking formation rather than a whole region; most first-time visitors get more out of Margaret River’s range of things to actually do once they’ve arrived.
