Perth 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Day 1: Kings Park, Elizabeth Quay, and getting your bearings
Land at Perth Airport, then take the Airport Line train, roughly 18 minutes to the CBD, on the flat “Go Anywhere Fare”: A$3.50 cash or contactless, A$2.80 with an Autoload SmartRider, covering any single trip up to 3 hours. Check into a CBD or Northbridge hotel, then walk Elizabeth Quay’s promenade before hopping the free CAT bus loop for an orientation lap of the CBD and Northbridge; both cost nothing.
Spend the afternoon in Kings Park and Botanic Garden: 400 hectares of bushland, free, open 24 hours, and roughly 60 hectares bigger than Central Park. The park’s official visitor page has current guided walk times. Time the State War Memorial lookout for late afternoon, when the CBD-and-river panorama is at its best, then head back down for dinner in Northbridge.
Do you need a car for two days in Perth? No. Everything on this itinerary sits inside the CBD, Northbridge, and a short ferry or bus ride, all covered by the free CAT loop, the Free Transit Zone, or the flat Go Anywhere Fare. A rental car adds parking costs without saving real time.
Day 2: The WA Museum, the Cultural Centre, and Cottesloe Beach
Morning goes to the Perth Cultural Centre: WA Museum Boola Bardip (A$15 adult, A$10 concession, genuinely not free anymore despite what older posts still claim), the Art Gallery of Western Australia, and PICA, all in the same Northbridge block. Budget two to three hours if the museum’s special exhibitions interest you.
Is the WA Museum still free? No. A free-entry promotion ran December 2024 to March 2025 and has ended; general admission is now A$15 adult, A$10 concession, free under-15. It’s still fair value for a five-building museum precinct, just don’t expect the old deal. Check current hours at the WA Museum before you plan the morning around it.
Afternoon, take the bus or a short rideshare to Cottesloe Beach, Perth’s classic first beach: white sand, Norfolk pines, calmer swimming than Scarborough, and the Indiana Tea House for a sunset drink. Have dinner back in Northbridge or at one of Cottesloe’s beachside cafes before your flight out.
Before you go
Carry water and sunscreen even on an overcast day; Perth’s UV runs extreme most of the year regardless of temperature. And if anyone in Kings Park warns you about drop bears, it’s a decades-old joke, not a real animal, so don’t waste a second worrying about it.
