Book these before you go
- ETA or eVisitor : sort entry before you fly, Australia has no visa-free entry.
- MCG ground tour : around AUD $38, book ahead if a match isn’t on that day.
- St Kilda penguins: the dusk viewing slot is free but needs a timed reservation that books out.
Day 1: CBD, laneways, and Federation Square
Morning: Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, free to wander, then the laneways: Hosier Lane, Degraves St, and the two 19th-century arcades, the Block Arcade (1892) and Royal Arcade (1870).
Afternoon: ⚠ NGV Australia (the Ian Potter Centre) at Fed Square is a separate free building from NGV International on St Kilda Rd, don’t merge the two. ACMI’s free moving-image museum is right there too.
Evening: A walk along the Yarra to Southbank, dinner in Chinatown, the oldest continuously running Chinatown in the Western world.
Day 2: MCG, markets, and St Kilda
Morning: The MCG, Australia’s largest stadium, with an Australian Sports Museum and ground tours (around AUD $38).
Midday: Queen Victoria Market (1878) for lunch and a browse.
Afternoon: Tram out to St Kilda for Luna Park, the world’s oldest continuously running amusement park, and Acland St.
Evening: The little penguins come ashore on the breakwater at dusk, free but book the timed reservation ahead, it sells out.
Day 3: Fitzroy, Carlton, and the gardens
Morning: Fitzroy’s Brunswick St for vintage shops and street art.
Midday: Carlton’s Lygon St, credited as the birthplace of the country’s espresso culture. Pellegrini’s (1954) is still pulling shots there.
Afternoon: The Royal Botanic Gardens (free) or the Shrine of Remembrance (free), both an easy walk from Southbank.
Evening: Eureka Skydeck (around AUD $30-40), 88 floors over Southbank. ⚠ The nearby Melbourne Star observation wheel is closed for restoration, don’t plan around it.
Is three days the right amount for Melbourne?
For most first-timers, yes: this covers the CBD, the MCG, St Kilda, and Melbourne’s two best-known neighbourhoods without rushing. Want a fourth day for Brunswick, Richmond, or Williamstown, our 4-day itinerary adds it. Get your ETA or eVisitor sorted before you fly and load a Myki once you land, trams and buses outside the Free Tram Zone need one.
