Sights to See in Sinaia
Sinaia packs its sights into a small area, from royal castles on the edge of the forest to a mountain plateau above 2,000 m. Most are close together and can be seen on foot, with the cable car for the high ground. Prices are in Romanian lei.
Peleș Castle
King Carol I built Peleș as his summer palace between 1873 and 1914, in Neo-Renaissance style. It was the first European palace powered by locally produced electricity. From the outside, the Italian Renaissance terraces are worth a slow walk, and the grounds stay open even when the interior is closed. Inside, the guided route takes in the Hall of Honor, the Arms Room and the Royal Library. Entry is 100 lei for an adult. The castle is closed on Monday and Tuesday and for part of each year, and in 2026 it is closed from 2 November to 1 December.
Pelișor Castle
Pelișor is the smaller castle next door, built from 1899 to 1902 for Crown Prince Ferdinand and Queen Marie. It is Art Nouveau with Celtic and Byzantine touches, and the Golden Chamber has gilded sycamore walls. Adults pay 30 lei. It is closed Monday and Tuesday, and from 28 September to 3 November in 2026. Foișor, the nearby hunting lodge, is a state residence and not open to visitors.
Sinaia Monastery
Prince Mihail Cantacuzino founded the monastery in 1695 after a pilgrimage to Mount Sinai, and the town is named after it. The Old Church dates from 1695, and the Great Church was built between 1842 and 1846. The statesman Take Ionescu is buried in the grounds. The monastery is still home to a community of monks, so dress modestly and keep your voice low. The museum is usually open daily except Monday from April to October, around 10:00 to 16:00, for a small fee.
Sinaia Casino
The Casino in Dimitrie Ghica Park was built in 1912 and 1913 on King Carol I’s initiative, designed by Petre Antonescu in the Neo-Romanian style. It is now a conference centre. The outside is free to view from the park, and the interior is open on guided tours only. See casino-sinaia.ro for the schedule.
Babele and the Sphinx
On the Bucegi plateau, the weathered rock formations of Babele and the Sphinx are the best-known natural landmarks. Reach them on foot from Cota 2000, or by the separate cable car from Bușteni. The plateau is high and exposed, with sudden fog and strong wind, so dress for alpine conditions and check that the lifts are running before you commit to a long walk.
George Enescu Memorial House
Villa Luminiș in Cumpătu is where the composer lived and worked. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, about 09:00 to 16:00.
Bears
Bears roam the forests around town. Do not feed them, because it is illegal, and do not walk alone on forest paths at dusk or night. Stay in your car if you see one on the road up to Cota 1400.
