A Romantic Evening in Shakhrisabz
Shakhrisabz suits a quiet couple’s trip built around evening light, a slow dinner and a mountain road. It is a small town in southern Uzbekistan, so the romance here lies in the setting and the pace. This page suggests how to put a gentle day or one night together.
Ak-Saray at the end of the day
The two surviving pylons of Ak-Saray, about 38 m high, are the most photogenic sight in town. Go late in the afternoon, when the heat has eased and the light is lower. Walk the plaza slowly and take pictures of the arch against the sky. The pylons are a partial ruin and the interior is not visited, so this is a stroll around the outside. There is a bronze statue of Timur on the palace site as well. Allow an hour.
The monuments further south, Dorut Tilavat and Dorus Saodat, are tombs and active places of prayer. They are best seen as part of your daytime sightseeing, with quiet voices and modest dress, and are not part of a romantic evening plan.
Dinner in a courtyard
Shakhrisabz is known for tandir gosht, mutton roasted in clay ovens, and a courtyard dinner at a local hotel or guesthouse is the easiest way to enjoy it. Hotel Kesh Palace, on Fusunkor Street, is a 3-star hotel. Ask your host about dinner when you book, so a table is ready when you want to eat.
Tea at a teahouse
The choyxona (teahouse) tradition gives you a low-key option: a pot of tea, bread and a long sit. Evening is a relaxed time to go, and cash is the safe way to pay.
The pass viewpoint on the way back
If you are returning to Samarkand, tour operators commonly stop at a viewpoint on the Takhtakaracha Pass, which tops out at about 1,650 m. It makes a pleasant last stop for mountain scenery before the descent. In winter the pass can close after heavy snow or ice, so check conditions the day before and do not plan to drive it in the dark.
A simple overnight plan
- Arrive in the late morning from Samarkand, about two hours by road.
- Visit the monuments and the Chorsu bazaar at your own pace, with a break at the Amir Temur Museum.
- Walk to Ak-Saray late in the afternoon.
- Dinner at your hotel or a teahouse, then an early night.
- Leave after breakfast, stopping at the pass viewpoint.
