Day Trips from Sinaia
Sinaia sits on the main railway line between Bucharest and Brașov, which makes it a handy base for short trips up and down the Prahova valley. Distances below are by road from Sinaia, and prices are in Romanian lei.
Bușteni and Cantacuzino Castle
Bușteni is about 10 km north of Sinaia. Its main sight is Cantacuzino Castle, a Neo-Romanian building from 1911 that now holds an art gallery. Its grounds were used as the outdoor setting for Nevermore Academy in the Wednesday series, and filming took place outdoors only. A recent guide gave hours of Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 19:00 and Friday to Sunday until 20:00, so confirm on castelulcantacuzino.ro before going.
Bușteni to Babele and the Sphinx
A cable car from Bușteni climbs to the Bucegi plateau and the rock formations of Babele and the Sphinx. It is run by a different operator from the Sinaia lifts. Reports put an adult return fare at over 200 lei, and wind often stops the cars, so check the station before you buy.
Brașov Old Town
Brașov lies about 45 km north of Sinaia. The old town is built around Council Square and the Black Church, and it makes an easy walking day in Transylvania. Trains on the Bucharest to Brașov line stop at Sinaia, so the trip can be done without a car. Check timetables on cfrcalatori.ro or infofer.ro, because frequency varies.
Bran Castle and Râșnov Fortress
Both are reached by way of Brașov and sit close together, so they pair well in one day. Allow a long day, since you pass through Brașov each way, and check each site’s current opening hours and prices before you set out.
Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești
The Libearty Bear Sanctuary is at Zărnești in Brașov County, about 1.25 hours by road from Sinaia, travelling through Brașov. Ask the sanctuary about booking and current admission prices before you go.
Going without a car
Sinaia to Bucharest Gara de Nord takes about 1 hour 30 minutes by train, which avoids the heavy weekend traffic on the DN1 road. The rail line to Brașov continues north of Sinaia.
A note on bears
Bears are common on forest edges and the road up to Cota 1400. Feeding them is illegal and carries fines of 10,000 to 30,000 lei. If you walk any forest path on a trip, make noise, stay off trails at dusk and after dark, and phone 112 if a bear is in a village or town.
Booking
Tours that combine Brașov, Bran and Râșnov can be compared on Viator and GetYourGuide . Check the castle at castelulcantacuzino.ro and trains at cfrcalatori.ro .
