Romantic Weekend in Sinaia
Sinaia suits a quiet couples’ break more than a grand one. It is a mountain town with royal castles, forest walks and a few good places to eat, and it keeps things simple. This page sets out what is there, in Romanian lei where prices apply, and what is not.
Where to stay
Hotel Bastion stands at Aleea Peleșului 2A, on the royal estate, close to Peleș and Pelișor. Other hotels in town have spas, including the spa at Hotel Carpathia. Compare rooms and dates on Booking.com.
Dinner
Two places are worth a look. Taverna Sârbului is on Calea Codrului, and Carol Gastro Bierhaus is at Aleea Peleșului 2, close to the castles. Check opening hours before you go.
A quiet walk to Peleș
Walk up Aleea Peleșului early in the day and the cobbled path and the forest are calm. Peleș Castle opens at 09:15 from Thursday to Sunday and at 10:00 on Wednesday, and it is closed Monday and Tuesday. Even when the interior is shut, the terraces and grounds can be walked. Peleș is closed to interiors from 2 November to 1 December in 2026, and Pelișor is closed from 28 September to 3 November, so check peles.ro for the dates that apply to your trip. An adult ticket is 100 lei for Peleș and 30 lei for Pelișor, booked in advance for a timed slot at bilete.peles.ro.
A ride to Cota 2000
When the lifts run, a cable car ride up the Bucegi mountain is a good shared outing. The Telecabina Sinaia leaves from the town centre to Cota 1400, and the Gondola Carp continues to Cota 2000. They stop in wind, fog or frost, and the gondola section between Cota 1000 and Cota 1400 is closed to the public, so queues build up. Go early, and take warm layers, since the plateau is much colder than the town.
A garden stroll
Dimitrie Ghica Park, in the middle of town, has century-old chestnut trees and the Casino, a Neo-Romanian building from 1912 and 1913 that is visited on a guided tour. Tours start hourly from 10:15.
Casino and spa facts
Gambling at the Casino ended in the late 1940s, and the building is now a conference centre. Sinaia has no natural thermal springs, so a spa day here means a hotel spa. If you want a thermal bath, other Romanian towns such as Băile Herculane and Băile Felix are known for them.
Wildlife safety on evening walks
Brown bears come to the edges of town after dark, usually near rubbish containers. Stay on lit streets in the evening and never feed a bear or move closer for a photo. Feeding bears carries fines of 10,000 to 30,000 lei. If your phone sounds an RO-ALERT, go indoors.
