Romantic Nelson: Wineries, Dinners, Sailing
Nelson suits couples who like long lunches, wine, coastal scenery and quiet evenings. The main romantic stops are cellar doors in the Moutere hills, a waterfront restaurant on Nelson Haven, fine dining in town, a wharf evening at Mapua and a day on the Abel Tasman coast. Prices are in NZD, and hours change through the year, so confirm by phone or online.
Wine in the Moutere hills
Neudorf Vineyards is at 138 Neudorf Road, Upper Moutere (phone 03 543 2643). Hours vary by season, roughly daily from 11:00 to 17:00 in season. Tastings start from about 35.
Gravity Winery and Cellar Door is at 243 Old Coach Road, Upper Moutere, and pours several labels. Hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00 or daily to 17:00 depending on the season, so phone before you drive out.
Dinner in town
The Boat Shed Cafe (350 Wakefield Quay) looks onto Nelson Haven. It opens Monday to Friday from 11:30 and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00, with a seasonal New Zealand menu. The “Trust the Chef” option is four or five courses. Book ahead, especially for a sunset table in summer.
Hopgood’s & Co (284 Trafalgar Street) is a fine-dining restaurant listed in the 2026 Cuisine Good Food Guide. A 2026 guide shows Tuesday to Saturday dinners from 17:30, with mains around 42 to 52 and a tasting menu around 135, so check the current menu.
An evening at Mapua Wharf
Mapua Wharf has Rimu Grove Cellar Door and Wine Bar (Shed 4, 6 Aranui Road), Golden Bear Brewing and The Smokehouse. Walk the wharf at dusk and finish with a drink on the water. The Mapua Ferry crosses to Rabbit Island in about 10 minutes if you want a short outing first.
Abel Tasman by sea
Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures sails day trips from Kaiteriteri, priced at about 98 to 190. Wilsons Abel Tasman lists a Split Apple Kayak outing from about 105 to reach Split Apple Rock. A water taxi to a quiet bay such as Bark Bay or Anchorage gives you a beach picnic and a short walk. Tides decide where you can cross on foot, so plan around the tide table.
Cable Bay
Cable Bay is about 21 km from Nelson and has a beach and a walkway. Bring a picnic and water. The walkway is closed in high fire risk and after dark, and for lambing from 1 August to 7 October each year.
Where not to swim
Pupu Springs near Takaka, Blue Lake in Nelson Lakes and Wharariki Beach are beautiful, but DOC bans contact with the water at the springs, asks visitors not to wash or swim in Blue Lake, and warns of rips at Wharariki. Treat them as places to look, not swim.
