Self-Guided Walks on Nusa Lembongan
Walking Here Means Going It Alone
Nusa Lembongan has no guided walking-tour operators, so every walk on the island is a self-guided one. That suits the place. The island covers about 8 square kilometres, the highest point is only about 50 metres, and most walks take under two hours. There are no mountain trails, waterfall hikes or jungle treks. For guided outings, look at boat, snorkel and island loop tours instead, described on the attraction tours page.
Jungut Batu to Mushroom Bay
This coastal walk takes about 35 minutes each way and links the island’s two main beach areas. Go in the morning when it is cooler, and carry water. Mushroom Bay is the sheltered beach, with speedboats nearby, so take care if you swim. If you tire, a boat between the two costs about IDR 30,000.
The Jungut Batu Beachfront
The beachfront is flat and easy, lined with traditional jukung fishing boats. Surf breaks sit offshore, and the sunset and the view of Mount Agung to the north-north-east make it a good evening stroll. The sun does not set behind Agung, because sunset is in the west over open water.
Cliff Path to Devil’s Tear and Dream Beach
The south-west route runs from Sandy Bay past Devil’s Tear to Dream Beach, on uneven limestone. Wear sturdy shoes with grip. At Devil’s Tear stay behind the rope barriers and keep off wet rock, since waves have swept people away here. At Dream Beach keep to the sand above the water line, and do not walk out on the beach rocks at high tide. The cove has rip currents, so it is a place to look, not to swim.
Yellow Bridge to Ceningan
From Lembongan Village walk over the Yellow Bridge, which is open to pedestrians, bicycles and motorbikes, then follow the waterfront path on Ceningan to Sea Breeze and the road to the cliff bar. The Blue Lagoon lies about 70 to 90 minutes from Lembongan Village. Look at the cove from the path, as the cliffs there are unfenced.
Mangrove Edge and Panorama Point
In the north, the mangrove edge makes a short, flat stroll, and Panorama Point on the hill gives a wide view over the island.
Walking Tips
- Start early, because the tropical sun is strong by midday.
- Carry water, sun protection and shoes with a good sole.
- Wear a sarong and sash if you enter a temple such as Pura Puncak Sari, and step around the canang sari offerings on the ground.
- Roads are narrow and shared with scooters, trucks and bicycles, so walk facing traffic where there is no pavement.
- On a day trip, leave time to reach the harbour before the last boats to Sanur at about 17:00.
If You Want a Guide
If you want a guide, a truck or buggy tour passes Panorama Point, the Gala-Gala Underground House, the Yellow Bridge, Devil’s Tear and Dream Beach in a single loop.
