Malang Multi-Day Trips: Bromo, Ijen, Bali
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: Wildfires closed Mount Bromo several times between August and October 2026, and four firefighters and volunteers died fighting a blaze at Bukit Kembang on 15 October. The Pasuruan-side Penanjakan viewpoint reopened on 23 October with a daily cap of 2,752 visitors, but the Malang-side Jemplang gate can be shut on any given day. Bromo is at volcano alert Level II with no entry within 1 km of the crater, and Semeru is at Level III with its hiking route closed. Kawah Ijen was closed from 4 to 28 September 2026 by fire. Confirm every site’s status before you commit to a route. The UK government’s advice is at GOV.UK .
How These Circuits Work
Both circuits start and end in Malang and use a private car with a driver, which is the simplest way to link places that public transport reaches slowly. Build in a spare day if you can, because a closure at Bromo or Ijen can reshuffle the plan. International visitors reach Malang by road or rail from Surabaya’s Juanda airport, since Malang’s own airport handles domestic flights only.
Two Days: Tumpak Sewu and Bromo
Day 1. Leave Malang around 07:00 and drive south-east through Dampit, about 2.5 hours, to Tumpak Sewu in Lumajang Regency. The entry ticket is about Rp 20,000 and the site is open from 07:00 to 15:00. The trail to the canyon floor and the Goa Tetes cave is steep and slippery, so finish and climb out well before 13:00, in dry weather only. After a warung lunch, continue to a homestay in a Tengger mountain village such as Gubugklakah or Ngadas, or to a hotel at Tosari or Sukapura, and sleep early.
Day 2. A jeep collects you about 02:30 for the climb to the Penanjakan or King Kong Hill viewpoint, where sunrise comes between 05:00 and 06:00. Next the jeep crosses the Sea of Sand to the foot of Bromo for the crater rim climb. Pura Luhur Poten and the Savana grasslands are on the way back. Walking is the default way across the sand. Return to the homestay for breakfast, then drive down to Malang for about 14:00.
Costs. Private car, jeep, park tickets and a homestay add up to roughly Rp 1,500,000 to 2,200,000 per person, as a rough guide. Foreign Bromo entry alone is about Rp 255,000 and is booked online at bromotenggersemeru.id . A jeep alone runs roughly Rp 575,000 to 1,250,000.
Three Days: Bromo, Ijen and Bali
Day 1. Spend the morning in Malang, with a Kayutangan heritage walk and ice cream at Toko Oen. In the afternoon drive past Probolinggo to Cemorolawang on the edge of the Bromo caldera.
Day 2. Start before dawn for the Bromo sunrise and crater walk, around 03:00. After breakfast and checkout, drive east along the northern coast through Situbondo to Banyuwangi, which takes 6 to 7 hours, and sleep in Licin or Banyuwangi.
Day 3. Kawah Ijen is about 250 km from Malang, which is why it works as part of an overnight route and not as a day trip. The hiking gate at Paltuding opens at 02:00 and closes at 12:00. Hikers must carry a health certificate issued no more than three days before the visit and must wear a mask. Tickets are non-refundable and are booked at ayoketamannasional.kehutanan.go.id . The path climbs about 3 km to the crater at 2,386 m, where the blue fire shows in the dark and a turquoise lake appears at sunrise. The crater is closed on clean-up days, including 6 November and 4 December 2026. After the descent, continue to Pelabuhan Ketapang for the 45-minute ferry to Gilimanuk in Bali, or to Banyuwangi’s airport or train station.
Packing and Timing
Mornings at Bromo and Ijen are cold, so pack layers. Dry season runs from about May to October, and heavy afternoon rain from November to April makes canyon trails unsafe. Book accommodation early on weekends and holidays, when domestic Bromo tickets also cost more.
