Family Days in Malang and Batu
Planning Around Children
Most family outings from Malang are in Batu, the hill city 15 to 20 km uphill. The drive takes 45 to 60 minutes and can stretch to 90 minutes on weekends and holidays, which is a long time for small children, so pack snacks and plan one main stop a day. Weekday visits cost less and are quieter. Prices below are 2025 press figures and a guide only, so check the official site (jtp.id ) for the current tariff.
Batu Secret Zoo and Eco Green Park
Jatim Park 2 on Jl. Oro-Oro Ombo joins Batu Secret Zoo, which opened in 2010, with Museum Satwa, a wildlife museum, and Eco Green Park, which is also sold as Eco Active Park. The zoo and museum cost about Rp 125,000 on a weekday. With Eco Active Park the price is about Rp 150,000 on weekdays and Rp 170,000 on weekends. Enjoy the animals from a distance, follow the signs and staff instructions, and skip any offer of rides or close contact with animals.
Museum Angkut
Museum Angkut is a transportation museum with themed zones where children can look at old cars, carriages and other vehicles. A ticket is about Rp 110,000 and the museum is open from 12:00 to 20:00, which makes it a good afternoon stop after a morning elsewhere. Give yourselves a couple of hours to see it all.
Selecta Gardens
Taman Rekreasi Selecta is a mountain garden resort with flower beds, lawns and spring-fed pools. A regular ticket is about Rp 50,000. Cool air and open space make it an easy day for toddlers and grandparents alike.
Picking Apples
Several orchards in Batu sell pick-your-own visits. The activity is simple and short, and children enjoy it. Ask at the orchard about the fee before you go in, and bring a bag.
Coban Rondo and the Labirin
Coban Rondo is a waterfall on the mountain road between Batu and Pujon, in Malang Regency. Entry is about Rp 35,000 on weekdays and Rp 40,000 on holidays, and the grounds are open from about 07:00 to 17:00. A hedge maze, the Labirin, is ticketed separately. Paths near the water can be wet, so choose shoes with grip.
Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan
Back in the city, Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan is a short, colourful visit that suits a rest day. Entry is about Rp 5,000, from 07:00 to 17:00. Alleys are painted in bright murals, and a yellow glass-bottomed bridge links Jodipan to Kampung Tridi, which charges a separate fee. The alleys have steps and steep ramps, so folding strollers work better than large ones, and small children should hold a hand on the bridge.
Practical Tips
- Malang is cool in the evening, so bring a light jacket for the hills.
- Rainy season runs from November to April, with heavy afternoon downpours, so plan outdoor stops for the morning.
- Carry cash in rupiah for small gates, parking and snacks. Parks and hotels usually accept cards.
- Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek work across Malang and Batu and are easier than public minibuses with children.
