Walking Here Means Going It Alone Nusa Lembongan has no guided walking-tour operators, so every walk on the island is a self-guided one. That suits the place. The island covers about 8 square kilometres, the highest point is only about 50 metres, and most walks take under two hours. There are no mountain trails, waterfall hikes or jungle treks. For guided outings, look at boat, snorkel and island loop tours instead, described on the attraction tours page.

The Lay of the Land Nusa Lembongan is flat and low, with its highest point only about 50 metres above the sea. There are no mountains here, so the sights are coastal: cliffs and coves on the south-west, seaweed farms in the middle, mangroves in the north and a bridge across to Nusa Ceningan. Crystal Bay, Kelingking and Broken Beach are on Nusa Penida, a separate island across the water.

A Slow Island for Two Nusa Lembongan works for couples who want sunsets, a pool and an easy dinner more than a packed itinerary. The island is small and low, with beach clubs on the west and south coasts, quiet restaurants along the Jungut Batu beachfront and a handful of small resorts. Many hotels, dive shops and shops add a 3 to 5 percent card surcharge, and there are ATMs near Mushroom Bay and Jungut Batu.

A Three-Night Plan Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida make a natural three-night trip, all in Klungkung Regency. Base yourself on Lembongan, where beds, food and dive shops are, and treat the other two islands as outings. Build a spare half day into the plan, because swell can cancel boats. Day 1, arrival. Take a morning fast boat from Sanur, which takes about 30 minutes. Drop your bags, visit the Gala-Gala Underground House in Lembongan Village, walk to the Yellow Bridge, and finish with sunset at the Sandy Bay Beach Club.

Planning With Children Nusa Lembongan suits families who like beaches and boats, with a few places to keep away from. The island is small, the roads are narrow and hilly, and the ocean on the south-west side is rough. A good family day sticks to the sheltered beaches in the north and east and treats the cliff coast as a place to look, not to play. Mushroom Bay Mushroom Bay is the most sheltered beach on the island and is largely safe for swimming, though it needs care.

Choosing a Day Trip Three outings work well from Nusa Lembongan: Nusa Ceningan on foot or two wheels, a full day on Nusa Penida by public boat, and a return run to Bali. The first fits a half day, the second needs an early start, and all of them depend on the weather and the last boat home. Nusa Ceningan, Half a Day Cross the Yellow Bridge, a 140 m span for pedestrians, bicycles and motorbikes, then follow the waterfront path.

What the Tours Cover Tours on Nusa Lembongan fall into four groups: snorkel boat trips, dive trips and courses, a driven loop of the island, and short mangrove and seaweed-farm outings. Nothing here is run on a bus, because the island has no buses and cars are rare. Most stops are reached by boat, pickup truck or on foot. Snorkel Boat Tours The standard trip visits three or four spots, usually Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay and a mangrove stop.

The Island in Brief Nusa Lembongan is a low coral island of about 8 square kilometres in Klungkung Regency, roughly 30 minutes by fast boat from Sanur on Bali. The activities here are mostly in or on the water: reef dives, surf breaks, a mangrove channel and sheltered beaches. There are no mountains, waterfalls, rafting or zip lines, and no buses. The island is small enough to cover by bicycle, scooter or on foot.
