Walvis Bay is a spread-out port city and its main sights are a short drive apart, so it suits short independent strolls rather than long guided walks. Walking here means the shore, the Waterfront and the old harbour area, while guided outings go by boat, 4x4 or on the dunes. This page covers the three walks that work, with tips for wind, fog and birds. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), pegged one to one to the South African rand.

Walvis Bay is a port city of about 102,700 people (2023 census) on a desert coast that gets roughly 13 mm of rain a year. Its sights are mostly natural and industrial: a wetland alive with birds, pink salt pans, a lighthouse on a sandspit and a very large dune. Fog is common and often burns off by midday, so bring a warm layer and plan outdoor viewing for late morning onward.

Walvis Bay is a working port rather than a resort strip, so a romantic stay here is built around light, wildlife and the desert instead of beach lounging. The Atlantic is cold with rip currents and the lagoon is a shallow tidal mudflat, so neither is a place to swim. What the town does well is golden-hour drives, dinners over the lagoon, a night at a lighthouse lodge and sparkling wine on the water.

Walvis Bay does not have a long menu of set multi-day tours. What it offers is a compact two to three day stay that pairs the port with neighbouring Swakopmund, a handful of overnight operator expeditions, one remote lodge at the lighthouse, and its role as a leg in a longer Namibia circuit. This page lays out those real options and how to fit them together. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), pegged one to one to the South African rand.

Families visiting Walvis Bay will find that most of the fun is wildlife and sand: seals, pelicans, flamingos, dolphins and one very large dune. The sea is cold and the afternoon wind can be strong, so plan outings for the morning and bring jackets, hats and sun cream for every child. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), which are pegged one to one to the South African rand. Catamaran cruise A catamaran cruise from the Waterfront on Atlantic Street is the easiest wildlife outing with children.

Walvis Bay is a handy base for day outings because the best-known sights lie along the coast and across the desert within a few hours. Distances below are from Walvis Bay unless stated. Drive on the left, carry water and warm clothing, and allow for fog that often burns off by midday. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$). Sandwich Harbour About 55 km south of town, Sandwich Harbour is the classic half-day outing from Walvis Bay.

Most attractions around Walvis Bay sit well outside the town grid: a seal sandspit, a lagoon, a salt works, a dune belt and a protected harbour to the south. Getting to them usually means a 4x4, a boat or both, so guided tours are the normal way to see them. This page lists the tour types that appear in operator listings and what to check before choosing one. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), pegged one to one to the South African rand.

Walvis Bay is Namibia’s main port, on the central coast with Swakopmund 30 to 35 km to the north along a paved road. Activities here revolve around the cold Atlantic, the shallow lagoon and the dune belt just inland. Prices are quoted in Namibian dollars (N$), tied one to one to the South African rand, and rand notes are taken almost everywhere. Drive on the left. Fog is common and often burns off by midday, so pack warm layers even in summer.
