Romantic Things to Do in Mumbai
Mumbai is a dense, crowded city, and its romantic moments are found in views from above, a table by a window and an hour at the water’s edge at sunset rather than in beach time. The sea here is not for swimming: the city’s beaches are crowded, polluted at times and officially rated unsafe in many places, and the civic body asks people to stay away from the water in the June to September monsoon. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR), and the options below are few but real.
Marine Drive at sunset
The 3.6 km seafront promenade is free and open at all hours. Walk it from Nariman Point towards Girgaum as the light drops and the lights of the Queen’s Necklace come on. Keep off the sea wall and the rocks at high tide, and in the monsoon check the tide table before you plan a visit. It is most comfortable between October and February.
Rooftop bars with a view
Three hotel bars are listed as trading in 2026. Aer is on the 34th floor of the Four Seasons in Worli. Dome is on the 8th floor of the InterContinental on Marine Drive. Asilo is at The St. Regis in Lower Parel, with the floor given as 37 or 40 by different sources. Each has a dress code and a booking policy, so reserve ahead and check the current rules on the hotel’s own site. Sunset tables go first.
Afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge
The Sea Lounge at the Taj Mahal Palace serves afternoon tea by reservation, in sittings from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 4:30 to 6:30 pm according to the hotel. Book on the hotel’s Sea Lounge page and dress smartly.
A private sunset sail
Private sails leave the Gateway of India. Oyster Sailing has advertised small-group sunset trips for up to 8 guests from jetty No. 5, and the Gateway Sailing Club also exists. A listing for Oyster ran to 31 March 2026, so confirm that departures are still on. A price has not been confirmed, so ask for a quote. Life jackets are mandatory on boats leaving the Gateway, and trips can be cancelled in rough weather or high tides. Check the Oyster Sailing listing for the latest schedule.
An Alibaug night away
For a quieter stay, Alibaug is reached by boat and is known for boutique hotels. Launches from the Gateway to Mandwa run at about INR 280 to 300 by wooden boat and about INR 600 to 800 by speedboat, per person. Regional boats pause in the monsoon, so go outside June to September. Practical tips
- Book rooftop tables and tea sittings at least a day ahead.
- Taxis start at about INR 33; autos at about INR 27, but autos do not run in South Mumbai.
- Avoid isolated stretches of the seafront after dark; the UK advice on India says to avoid isolated areas, including beaches, when alone.
