Day Trips from Mumbai
Mumbai has six sensible day-trip options: a ferry to the Elephanta Caves, the Kanheri Caves in a national park, a boat to Alibaug, the car-free hill station of Matheran, the Buddhist caves near Lonavala and white-water rafting at Kolad. Most are weather-dependent, and the June to September monsoon changes what runs. Fees below are in Indian rupees (INR) and come from secondary sources unless noted, so confirm them on the day.
Elephanta Caves by ferry
The rock-cut Shiva caves on Gharapuri Island have been a UNESCO site since 1987, and Cave 1 holds the famous Sadashiva sculpture. The ferry leaves from the Gateway of India and takes about an hour each way, with boats roughly every 30 minutes from about 09:00 and the last return around 17:30. The last outbound boat is reported at 14:00 or 15:30, so go in the morning. The caves and the ferries are closed on Mondays.
Ferry returns are reported at about INR 200 for economy to INR 260 for luxury, plus about INR 10 to sit on the upper deck. The cave ticket is about INR 600 for foreign visitors, with a small village fee, so confirm at the counter. Life jackets are mandatory on boats leaving the Gateway. Ferries are often cancelled or delayed from June to September, so check the same morning. See the ferry timetable page for current departure times.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri Caves
Take the Western Line train to Borivali, then a short taxi or auto to the park gate. The park is closed on Mondays and hours are reported as roughly 07:30 or 09:00 to 18:00. There are several separate tickets, foreigners pay more, and the Kanheri caves have their own ticket, so confirm all of them at the gate. A shuttle covers part of the way, and the caves lie about 5 km inside. At least 54 leopards live in and around the park, so stay on marked routes and leave before dusk. The Maharashtra tourism page describes the caves.
Alibaug via Mandwa
Boats from the Gateway of India to Mandwa run as wooden launches at about INR 280 to 300 or speedboats at about INR 600 to 800 per person. A roll-on ferry from Mazgaon (Bhaucha Dhakka) is reported at about INR 420 for an adult, taking about an hour, with three sailings a day. Regional passenger boats pause for the monsoon, and the roll-on ferry’s wet-season timetable is unconfirmed, so check with the operator at M2M Ferries .
Matheran
Matheran bans motor vehicles beyond Dasturi Naka, so you walk, ride a horse or take a shuttle. The Neral to Matheran toy train is suspended each monsoon; the 2026 suspension ran to 15 October and a restart date was not confirmed at the time of writing. A shuttle between Aman Lodge and Matheran keeps running.
Karla and Bhaja Caves
Use Lonavala as the base for these Buddhist caves. Karla was reported at about INR 300 for foreign visitors in 2023. Travel to Lonavala first and continue to the caves from there.
Kolad river rafting
Kolad rafting on the Kundalika river is graded II to III, and operators quote about INR 1,200 to 2,400 per person. Water levels depend on dam releases, and the season is mostly the monsoon. Choose an operator that supplies helmets and life jackets, and follow the guide’s instructions at all times.
