Varanasi Attraction Tours and Guided Walks
Guided tours in Varanasi fall into three groups: walks led by local operators, boat trips along the ghats, and temple visits where the official ticket is the sensible way to skip a queue. This page lists what exists and what to check before paying. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, roughly 95 to the US dollar) and move often, so confirm them first.
Local walking operators
VaranasiWalks, with a meeting point at Assi Ghat, runs boat rides of about 1.5 to 2 hours and walks of about 2.5 to 3 hours. It also offers night walks and a Sarnath tour. Prices are not published on its site, so ask by message and get the total in writing. See VaranasiWalks for the current list. Roobaroo Walks covers heritage walks and the Subah-e-Banaras dawn programme at Assi, with a yoga session. See Roobaroo Walks for the dawn format.
Heritage walk along the ghats
A guided walk from Assi Ghat north to Manikarnika is sold as a standard route. The walk passes the burning ghat and does not go into it. Manikarnika is a working cremation ground where families are mourning, so do not photograph pyres, bodies or mourners, and keep voices low. A restoration project is under way there, so conditions around the ghat can change. Decline any stranger who offers a guided look from a rooftop; the offer usually ends in a demand for “wood money”.
Alaknanda river cruise
The Alaknanda cruise sails morning and evening from Ravidas Ghat, and bookings go through alaknandacruise.com . A 2025 blog quotes tickets from about INR 1,000, while other sources range from INR 700 to 2,500. Current sailings are not confirmed, so check the site before planning a day around it.
Temple visits
For Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the trust’s own Sugam Darshan queue-skip ticket costs INR 300 per person, bought on the trust’s site or at its counters. Phones, cameras, other gadgets and pens are not allowed inside, and free lockers are provided. Foreign visitors with a valid passport can buy a darshan ticket for INR 600 at the head-office help desk with the original passport. Staff at the gate decide who enters the sanctum, so follow their directions. Guided “VIP” resellers are not the trust. The trust FAQ lists the current rules.
Sarnath
Sarnath, about 10 km from the ghats, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 25 July 2026. The Archaeological Park holds the Dhamek and Dharmarajika stupas, and the museum holds the Lion Capital of Ashoka. The museum is open 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Fridays. Fees are not confirmed, so ask your operator what a ticket will cost.
Tour buses and the ropeway
Tour buses cannot stop at any ghat, because the old city’s lanes are pedestrian and cars and buses stop at Godowlia or about 1.5 km short of the temple. The Kashi ropeway had not opened by late September 2026, with a target of 24 November 2026.
Before you book
Ask whether a price is per person or per group, how long the tour lasts, where it starts and ends, and which language the guide speaks. Avoid tours that include a shopping stop; Banarasi brocade is best bought directly from a weaver. July to September is flood season, when boats and ghat walks can stop at short notice, so check that boats are running. To compare options, browse Varanasi tours on Viator .
