Varanasi Trip Plans for 2 to 5 Days
Two to five days is the useful range for Varanasi. Two days covers the river, the main temple and one outing, while five leaves room for museums, the silk lanes and a slow afternoon. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, roughly 95 to the US dollar), and train times and fees change, so confirm them before you book.
Two to three days
Spend the first morning on a sunrise boat from Assi to Dashashwamedh, and start the day at the free Subah-e-Banaras programme if you want to be at Assi before dawn. Keep the evening for the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, which is free from the steps and tied to sunset. Use the second day for Kashi Vishwanath Temple and an Old City food walk through Kachori Gali, then spend the third morning at Sarnath. If you want the Mangala Aarti, the temple’s early aarti, plan on a 3 am report time and a ticket of INR 500 from the trust’s portal. The temple trust site lists the aarti tickets.
Four to five days
Add Ramnagar Fort and its museum, the Banaras Hindu University campus with the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum, and an afternoon in the silk lanes of Madanpura, buying from a weaver. Leave one afternoon empty, because the lanes and the heat wear people out faster than expected. Day trips such as Chunar Fort or Prayagraj fit into a fifth day, as long as you are happy with a long day out.
Where to stay
Assi Ghat and the area south of it are calmer than the Dashashwamedh and Godowlia core. BrijRama Palace at Darbhanga Ghat is a heritage palace hotel on the river, run by the IHCL family since January 2026. The Rajghat Study Centre, run by the Krishnamurti Foundation, takes guests at about INR 1,400 for a single and INR 2,200 for a double plus tax, with a two-night limit; see its booking page . Timing your trip
- July to September is flood season, so expect lost boat days and an aarti moved to a rooftop. Boats were suspended in September 2026, so build slack into any plan.
- Dev Deepawali falls on 24 November 2026, when rooms sell out and the ghats are packed.
- Ramnagar Ramlila, a month of evening performances, ends in late October 2026, with the next cycle in September 2027.
- October to March is the comfortable season, and April to June is very hot.
Onward travel
The Vande Bharat to New Delhi takes about 8 hours and the Agra Cantt service about 7, and the Varanasi to Ranchi Vande Bharat has run since 2 September 2026. The Delhi train is reported as not running on Tuesdays and the Agra train as not running on Fridays. Confirm times on IRCTC. The airport is about 25 km from the ghats and takes 45 to 75 minutes by road.
Practical notes
Bottled water only, and stay out of the river. Do not photograph the burning ghats, and decline anyone who offers a rooftop view, because the offer usually ends in a demand for “wood money”.
