Varanasi With Children: Family Activities
Varanasi has few attractions built for children. Most of the city is crowded riverside steps, narrow lanes shared with motorbikes and cows, and working temples, so family days here take planning. The options below are the calmer ones, and the sections after them cover what to avoid. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, roughly 95 to the US dollar) and are approximate.
Sarnath Deer Park and archaeological park
Sarnath, about 10 km from the ghats, is the easiest outing with children. The grounds are landscaped, there are deer, and there is room to walk. No separate ticket price for the park was found, so check at the gate. Older children may enjoy the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara temple, which dates from 1931 and has frescoes inside. The museum, open 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Fridays, holds the Lion Capital of Ashoka. Sarnath was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 25 July 2026, and the tone there is quiet. See the museum listing for hours.
Ramnagar Fort museum
Across the river, about 14 km by road, the fort museum shows vintage American cars, palanquins and an armoury. A museum listing gives about INR 200 for a foreign adult and INR 100 for a foreign child aged 5 to 12, though fees are not officially confirmed. It is open 10:00 to 17:00, and the car collection is the part children tend to remember.
BHU campus and the New Vishwanath Temple
The Banaras Hindu University campus is green and calmer than the old city. The New Vishwanath (Birla) Temple, built between 1931 and 1966, is open to all faiths with no fee. Shoes come off and photography is not allowed. Opening hours are reported differently by different sources, so check them first.
A short boat ride in the dry months
A sunrise boat between Assi and Dashashwamedh suits children who like water, but only from October to March, when river levels are lower. Ask for life jackets before you board, as availability varies. Keep children seated, and keep hands out of the water, since the Ganga is polluted. During the July to September flood season boats are suspended, most recently in September 2026, so check that boats are running.
What to plan around
- Crowds and lanes: the old city lanes carry motorbikes and cows, so hold small children’s hands. Cars and buses stop at Godowlia or about 1.5 km short of the temple, so expect a walk.
- Monkeys: they gather at temples such as Sankat Mochan, so keep bags closed and food out of sight.
- Heat: April to June reaches about 45 degrees C, so go early or stay out of the city.
- Water and food: use bottled water, and choose busy stalls with fresh oil.
- Burning ghats: Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds, so keep children away.
- Temple rules: Kashi Vishwanath does not allow phones, cameras or pens, and queues are long, so it is rarely a good fit for young children.
