Multi-Day Trips from Mumbai
Multi-day trips from Mumbai head in three directions: east to the rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora, north-east to Nashik, and south or south-east to Alibaug, Lonavala and Pune. Fees are in Indian rupees (INR). Several figures come from blogs rather than official sources, so treat them as a guide and confirm on arrival.
Ajanta and Ellora
These two cave complexes are usually combined over two or three nights, using Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as the base. Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora is closed on Tuesdays, so plan the order of visits around that. Entry at each is reported at about INR 600 for foreign visitors and INR 40 for Indian visitors, and the Archaeological Survey of India ticketed monuments page is the place to look for the current figure.
For the journey, the Vande Bharat service between Jalna and Mumbai’s CSMT stops at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The launch timetable showed a run of about 6 hours 50 minutes, six days a week except Wednesday, but timings have since been revised, so check the National Train Enquiry System before booking. Flying is the other option.
Nashik and Trimbakeshwar
Nashik is known for its vineyards and for the pilgrimage town of Trimbakeshwar. The temple trust has said that non-Hindus may not enter the complex, while another guide says only the sanctum is barred, so do not assume entry and follow the instructions of the temple staff. Winery visits are a separate half-day; check each estate’s own site for tasting hours and booking, as 2026 status was not confirmed.
Pune and the Western Ghats forts
Pune sits on the plateau beyond the Western Ghats. Shaniwar Wada and the Aga Khan Palace are the two sights most often named for a short stay. Opening times and fees were not confirmed for this page, so check them locally. Fort walks in the Ghats are hot and slippery in the monsoon; carry water and wear shoes with grip.
Alibaug overnight
Alibaug works as a night away. Launches from the Gateway of India to Mandwa use wooden boats at about INR 280 to 300 or speedboats at about INR 600 to 800 per person, and a ferry from Mazgaon is reported at about INR 420 for an adult. Regional boats pause during the monsoon, so book an overnight here outside June to September, and check the timetable at M2M Ferries . Most Indian beaches have no warning signs, flags or lifesaving equipment, so stay out of the water.
Lonavala as a one-night base
Lonavala is a hill-station base for the Karla and Bhaja caves. Karla was reported at about INR 300 for foreign visitors in 2023. Go in the cooler months of October to February, when the walk up to the caves is more comfortable.
Planning the return
Allow a buffer before an evening flight home. In the monsoon, trains and roads out of the city can be delayed by flooding. If you are travelling with luggage, a taxi from the station starts at about INR 33 for the first 1.5 km.
