Day Trips from Varanasi: Sarnath and Beyond
Four places work as day trips from Varanasi: Sarnath, Ramnagar Fort, Chunar Fort and, as a long day, Prayagraj. Distances below are approximate road or rail figures, and fees, train times and fares change, so check before you go. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, roughly 95 to the US dollar).
Sarnath
Sarnath is about 10 km from the ghats (sources give 8 to 13 km) and takes 30 to 45 minutes by car. Local trains and buses also run there, and auto-rickshaw drivers quote a few hundred rupees one way, so agree the fare first. This is where the Buddha gave his first sermon, and the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 25 July 2026. The archaeological park holds the Dhamek and Dharmarajika stupas, the remains of the Ashoka pillar and the Chaukhandi Stupa, a brick mound crowned by a tower added in 1588. The Mulagandha Kuti Vihara temple dates from 1931 and has frescoes inside. The museum holds the Lion Capital of Ashoka and is open 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Fridays. A travel guide reports a site fee of about INR 300 for foreign visitors, but confirm it at the gate. See the UNESCO announcement and the museum listing . Allow half a day, and keep the tone quiet in the grounds.
Ramnagar Fort
The fort stands across the river, about 14 km by road via the bridge, or roughly 45 minutes. A boat from Dashashwamedh takes about an hour when boats are running. Maharaja Balwant Singh built it in 1750. The museum inside shows vintage American cars, palanquins, an armoury and an astronomical clock dated 1852, and it is open 10:00 to 17:00. A museum listing gives about INR 200 for a foreign adult, though fees are not officially confirmed. The Ramnagar Fort page covers the history. The Ramnagar Ramlila, a month of evening performances, ends in late October 2026, and the next cycle is September 2027.
Chunar Fort
Chunar Fort is about 35 to 40 km away and takes 1 to 1.5 hours each way. Hours and fees are reported differently by different sources, so ask locally before you set out. It suits a half day by car.
Prayagraj
Prayagraj, at the Sangam where the rivers meet, is about 125 km away by rail, roughly 1.5 hours on the Vande Bharat. It works as a long day if you start early, and confirm train times on IRCTC. The Kumbh Mela is held in Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, not in Varanasi.
Places that need a night
Khajuraho is about 400 km away, 8 to 10 hours each way by road, and Bodh Gaya is roughly 250 km, so both are overnight trips in practice. Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary lies in Bihar about 100 km away and is not a wildlife drive; tigers are not resident there.
Planning tips
Start early in summer, since April to June reaches about 45 degrees C. During the July to September flood season, the boat route to Ramnagar can stop at short notice, so keep the bridge road as a fallback. A car with a driver for Sarnath and Ramnagar together is a common choice; to compare options, browse Varanasi day trips on Viator and confirm what the price includes.
