Romantic Stays Near Kazungula
Kazungula itself is a border and freight junction, so a romantic trip here is built around lodges and boat trips on the river, not around the town. The best settings are on the Chobe in Namibia, on the Zambezi near Livingstone and on the water at sunset from Kasane. Kasane is in Botswana, about 8 km west of the Kazungula Bridge, and it is where boats to the Namibian lodges leave.
Chobe Water Villas, Namibia
Chobe Water Villas sits in the Kasika Conservancy on the Namibian bank of the Chobe River. The stilted villas face Chobe National Park and Sedudu Island, and the lodge is reached by boat from Kasane in about 15 minutes. Rates reported for the lodge are all-inclusive, so ask what the price covers before you compare it with others.
Ichingo Chobe River Lodge, Namibia
Ichingo is a river lodge on Impalila Island, also in Namibia and also reached by boat from Kasane. Birders will enjoy it, because operator itineraries on the island list Pel’s fishing owl, African finfoot and white-backed night heron. Namibian immigration is cleared at Kasane. Reviews and rates for 2026 are listed online, so compare current prices.
Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma, Zambia
This riverside lodge is on the Zambezi near Livingstone and the Falls, not at Kazungula. It suits a Falls-focused trip, and the Falls are roughly 80 km from the Kazungula Bridge. Rates for 2026 are listed, so check the latest.
Sunset on the water
Several lodges around Kasane offer private sunset cruises on the Chobe, and these are the simplest romantic outing if you are staying in Botswana. Ask for a private boat if you want quiet, and ask what drinks and snacks are included. Boat captains keep a safe distance from hippos, and you should follow their instructions.
A helicopter flight over the Falls
Helicopter flights over Victoria Falls leave from Livingstone and from Victoria Falls town. Operators exist on both sides, so compare flight lengths and prices when you book. The Falls are roughly 80 km from the Kazungula Bridge, about an hour to an hour and a quarter by road.
Planning the trip
Dry season, about May to October, brings animals to the river, which makes it the best time for game viewing. The green season, about November to April, brings storms, thick vegetation and migrant birds, and the highest malaria risk. Chobe District is a malaria area, so take medical advice on antimalarials. Devil’s Pool swimming at Livingstone Island is usually possible from about mid-August to mid-January, depending on river level, with a compulsory guide.
Safety on the river
Never swim in the Zambezi or the Chobe, because crocodiles and hippos live in both. Do not walk along the riverfront without a licensed guide. If an elephant is on the road, stop and keep your distance. Take normal precautions, and check current entry rules before you travel.
