Guided Walks Near Kazungula
Kazungula has no walking-tour product of its own. The town is a border and freight junction, with heavy truck traffic, and there is no town trail, heritage walk or museum route to follow. Guided walks do exist nearby, and this page covers them and the walks to avoid.
Kasane cultural village walk
In Kasane, Botswana, about 8 km west of the Kazungula Bridge, a guided walking tour of about two hours is listed under the name Kasane Cultural Village. It is described as taking in the Prison Baobab and a market. A traditional dance show is also listed in Kasane. Confirm days and prices with the operator.
Mukuni Village
Mukuni is a working Leya village in Zambia about 7 km from the Victoria Falls. You can walk through it with a local guide and browse the curio market. Treat it as a place where people live, and ask before taking photographs.
Mosi-oa-Tunya trails
The national park on the Zambian side has trails to the Falls. The Falls are roughly 80 km from the Kazungula Bridge, about one to one and a quarter hours by road. In the wet season the spray is heavy, so waterproofs help. The paths are the safest walking in the area.
Walks to avoid
Walking beside the Chobe or Zambezi banks, or in the bush, without a licensed guide is unsafe, because elephants, hippos and crocodiles use these areas. Do not walk the riverfront alone. Do not walk along the road verge near the border either, where heavy trucks pass all day. If you meet an elephant on a road, stop where you are and keep your distance. Never drive or walk between an elephant and its calf.
Do not swim or wade in either river.
Better than a walk
If your goal is wildlife, a boat is a safer choice than a walk. A Chobe river cruise from Kasane lasts about three hours, and an open-vehicle drive in Chobe National Park runs through the afternoon, commonly from about 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Walking safaris with licensed guides are the right choice for anyone who wants to be on foot among animals.
What to bring
Carry water, sun protection, closed shoes and a hat. Chobe District is a malaria area, with the highest risk from about November to April, so take medical advice on antimalarials. Take normal precautions and check current entry rules before you travel.
Entry and booking
Passports need six months of validity, with two blank pages for Zambia and three for Botswana. Search for guided walks and village visits on GetYourGuide and see the safety notes on the UK government Zambia safety page .
