Sights Around Kazungula
Sightseeing around Kazungula means a handful of real places spread over four countries. The town is a working border and freight junction, and the sights are the river, the bridge as a piece of engineering, and the Victoria Falls area about 80 km away. Kasane, in Botswana, is about 8 km west of the bridge.
Kazungula Bridge
The Kazungula Bridge opened on 10 May 2021. It is a road and rail bridge over the Zambezi, 923 m long and 18.5 m wide, built as a cable-stayed extradosed structure, with two traffic lanes, one rail track and pedestrian walkways. It curves to avoid Zimbabwean territory. The rail track is not yet linked to either rail network.
It works as a border crossing, not a viewpoint. Casual visits and pedestrian sightseeing on the bridge were banned in June 2021 after a surge of sightseers, and the bridge carries heavy truck traffic. See it by crossing it. The border post is announced as running 24 hours from 24 February 2026, and officials will direct you on stamps and queues. A per-vehicle toll applies to drivers, so check current rates.
The confluence and the tripoints
The Zambezi and Chobe rivers meet here, and the borders around them are unusual. Four countries come within a few hundred metres of each other, but they do not meet at one point. Two tripoints, one for Namibia, Botswana and Zambia to the west and one for Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe to the east, are joined by a Zambia and Botswana boundary of roughly 135 m. Namibia and Zimbabwe do not touch.
Chobe riverfront from the water
The best view of the river and its animals is from a boat from Kasane. Cruises last about three hours and see elephants, hippos, crocodiles and birds. The park fee applies, and Chobe is one of Africa’s largest elephant concentrations.
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and Victoria Falls
On the Zambian side, the national park and the Falls are about 80 km from the bridge, roughly one to one and a quarter hours by road. The wet season brings heavy spray, so waterproofs help.
Mukuni Village
Mukuni Village is a working Leya village about 7 km from the Falls, with a curio market. Visit it as a village that people live in, and ask before photographing anyone.
Livingstone Museum
The Livingstone Museum in Livingstone is the oldest and largest museum in Zambia, established in 1934. Confirm opening hours before you go.
Practical notes
Passports need six months of validity, with two blank pages for Zambia and three for Botswana. UK passport holders need no visa for 90 days in either country. Do not walk along the riverfront or the edge of the bush without a licensed guide. Do not swim in the Zambezi or the Chobe. Take normal precautions, and check current entry rules for health screening before you travel.
