Port Louis Museums and Guided Visits
Which visits suit a Port Louis day
Port Louis has no long list of operator-led tours. The attractions are museums, a racecourse and a handful of heritage sites, and most are visited with a ticket at the door, an audio guide or a self-guided route. Mornings are best, because the city quietens from about 17:00 and most of the centre is closed on Sundays.
Odysseo Oceanarium
Odysseo is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:15, and it closes on 1 January. Non-resident tickets are Rs 1,280 for adults and Rs 960 for children aged 4 to 12, and under 4s are free. Resellers list a guided visit at about Rs 250 and an audio guide at about Rs 145, so ask at the ticket desk what is on offer that day. The oceanarium is a short taxi ride from Caudan Waterfront.
Blue Penny Museum
The museum at Barkly Wharf, Caudan Waterfront, is open Monday to Saturday from 09:30 to 16:00. Non-resident adults pay Rs 325, children and students Rs 200, and a family of two adults and two children Rs 820. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays, and on 1 to 3 January.
Plan to be in the stamp room at quarter past the hour. The 1847 “Post Office” stamps, the one penny and two pence issues, are lit for 10 minutes then, and photography is not allowed in that room. The museum also shows the Paul and Virginie artwork.
L’Aventure du Sucre
This sugar museum at Beau Plan in Pamplemousses includes tastings. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, including public holidays. Last entry is advised at 15:00 and the ticket office closes at 15:15. It is closed on Sundays, from 24 to 26 December and from 31 December to 2 January. General entry is Rs 1,200 for adults and Rs 600 for children aged 6 to 13, youths, and students aged 18 to 25 with ID. Under 6s are free, and a family discount of 10 percent applies. The trip from Port Louis takes about 15 to 25 minutes by taxi or car.
Musee de la Photographie
This private photography museum is on Rue du Vieux Conseil. Check opening hours and the entry fee before you go.
Race day at Champ de Mars
A meeting at the Mauritius Turf Club racecourse is a live-event day out. The 2026 season runs from 25 April to about late November, with 27 meetings, mostly on weekends. Contact the club for dates, tickets and any hospitality packages.
Memorial sites
Aapravasi Ghat, the UNESCO site where indentured labourers from India arrived from 1834, can be visited with a guide on request through the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund. Confirm hours with the Trust Fund before you travel, as weekday hours of about 09:00 to 16:00 are reported and Saturday is shorter. The Intercontinental Slavery Museum, in the former Military Hospital on Quay Street, opened in September 2023. Check opening hours and any fee before you go. Both are memorials, so use official channels and keep a quiet, respectful manner.
Practical notes
- Carry Mauritian rupees for small purchases and taxis.
- Check your government’s travel advice before you go, and avoid demonstrations.
- Petty crime is common in Port Louis, so avoid poorly lit backstreets of the business district at night.
