Paphos District Sights, Mosaics and Churches
Paphos was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980, and the district keeps layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and medieval remains. Ticketed Department of Antiquities sites are listed first, then churches and smaller stops. Prices are 2026 figures in euros.
Kato Paphos Archaeological Park
Entry is EUR 4.50, beside the harbour. The park holds Roman villas with mosaic floors: the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion and Orpheus are the best known. Look for the Odeon, the Saranta Kolones fortress ruins and the lighthouse on the hill. Children and other reduced or free categories exist, so ask at the gate.
Hours are 08:30 to 19:30 from 16 April to 15 September and 08:30 to 17:00 from 16 September to 15 April. The site closes on 25 December, 1 January and Orthodox Easter Sunday. The visitcyprus.com listing has the current details.
Tombs of the Kings
This is a separate site about 2 km north of the park, with its own additional EUR 2.50 ticket. The name is misleading, because no kings were buried here. The rock-cut tombs, some with carved columns, held high officials and wealthy citizens. The ground is open and unshaded, so wear closed shoes and avoid the middle of the day in summer.
Paphos Castle
The castle stands on the harbour front and costs EUR 2.50, with 20% off for groups of more than 10. It has the same hours as the park. The roof gives a wide view over the harbour.
Palaepaphos, Kouklia
Palaepaphos, 14 km south-east of Paphos, was a major sanctuary of Aphrodite. The ticket is EUR 4.50 and includes the local museum in the Lusignan manor house, where the sacred stone of the goddess is kept.
Agios Neophytos at Tala
The Enkleistra, the hermit’s cell cut into the rock, is about 10 km north of Paphos. Its frescoes are the reason to visit. The combined ticket with the museum is EUR 2. Hours are 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 from April to October, and 09:00 to 16:00 from November to March. It closes on 25 December, 1 January, Green Monday, Easter Sunday and 15 August. Dress modestly and keep your voice low, as this is a place of worship.
Churches and the museum
Agia Paraskevi at Geroskipou has five domes and free entry. In Kato Paphos, Panagia Chrysopolitissa has a free open site with ruins and St Paul’s Pillar. Maa-Palaeokastro, on the headland at Coral Bay, is a Late Bronze Age settlement. The Archaeological Museum of the Pafos District, at Griva Digeni Avenue 43 in Ktima, is free and closed on Mondays.
Saving money
Department of Antiquities cards cost EUR 8.50 for 1 day, EUR 17 for 3 days and EUR 25 for 7 days, and they can pay for themselves if you visit several sites. Prices and hours can change without notice, so check the Department of Antiquities before you go.
