Melbourne: Where to Stay for Day Trips

Where you stay matters less here than in a city-only trip, since most day trips depart from the CBD or Southern Cross Station regardless of which neighborhood you pick. Still, some areas make more sense than others.
CBD: the default for a base trip
The CBD sits inside the Free Tram Zone, walkable to the laneways and Fed Square, and closest to where most day-trip tours and trains actually leave from. The historic Hotel Windsor and QT Melbourne on Russell St are both well documented, central options. If you’re unsure where to book, this is the safe default.
Southbank: river views, still central
Southbank puts you near the arts precinct and Eureka Skydeck, a short walk or tram ride from the CBD proper, and just as workable a base for day trips as the CBD itself.
St Kilda: beachy, a longer commute to day-trip departures
St Kilda gives you the beach, Luna Park, and the dusk penguins on your doorstep, but it’s a longer tram ride back into the CBD on the mornings you’re catching an early day-trip tour or train, worth factoring in if you’re doing an early Phillip Island or Great Ocean Road departure.
Fitzroy/Collingwood and South Yarra/Prahran
Fitzroy and Collingwood suit a hipper, more local stay; South Yarra and Prahran put you on Chapel St’s shopping and nightlife. Both work fine as a day-trip base, just add a little more transit time to the CBD than staying centrally would.
When to book an overnight instead of staying in Melbourne
Three of Victoria’s day trips are genuinely better as overnights than as a same-day round trip from the city, and your accommodation choice shifts for these.
Great Ocean Road: book a night in Apollo Bay or Lorne rather than pushing the whole loop in one day, this is the difference between a rushed 12-hour trip and one that actually leaves time at the coast.
Grampians (Gariwerd): at 2.5-3 hours out, Halls Gap is the honest overnight base rather than a single long day of driving.
Mornington Peninsula: workable as a day trip, but Sorrento or Portsea make sense for an overnight if you want to linger over the hot springs and wineries rather than watching the clock.
Getting your entry sorted before any of this
⚠ Australia requires an electronic visa for every visitor, there’s no visa-free entry: the ETA (subclass 601, around AUD $20 via the Australian ETA app) covers the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong, while the eVisitor (subclass 651, free, online) covers EU and UK passports. Sort this before booking anything else.
