Melbourne’s city core is a solid 3-4 days on its own, but the real case for basing yourself here is what sits within a few hours’ drive. Six genuine day trips fan out from the CBD, and one of them, the Great Ocean Road, is honestly better done as two days than one.
The day trips at a glance
| Day trip | Drive time | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Great Ocean Road / Twelve Apostles | ~3-4h one way | 2 days, 1 night beats a rushed single day |
| Yarra Valley | ~1h15 | true day trip, wine and wildlife |
| Phillip Island | ~1.5-2h | dusk penguins, car or tour only |
| Dandenong Ranges | ~1h | easiest trip, reachable by Metro train |
| Mornington Peninsula | ~1-1.5h | day trip or overnight |
| Ballarat / Sovereign Hill | ~1.5h | true day trip, V/Line train works |
| Grampians (Gariwerd) | ~2.5-3h | overnight beats a rushed day |
Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles: be honest about the time
This is the marquee reason people base themselves in Melbourne, and it’s also the one trip on this list that punishes you for treating it as a single day. The drive is genuinely 3-4 hours one way, so a single-day round trip means roughly 12 hours on the road and in the car park at the Twelve Apostles, with barely any time actually spent at the coast. Two days, one night, changes the trip entirely: stop for the wild koalas at Kennett River, overnight in Apollo Bay or Lorne, then reach the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge the next morning with the light still good. Car or a bus day tour both work, but the overnight version is the one worth planning for if you can spare the extra day.
Yarra Valley: wine and wildlife in one true day trip
About 1h15 from the city, this is a genuine day trip with no overnight required. Wine cellar doors are the obvious draw, and Healesville Sanctuary adds koalas, wombats, and kangaroos in a bush setting rather than an enclosure. Car or an organized tour, either works well here since there’s no long return drive to fight.
Phillip Island: the dusk penguins
About 1.5-2 hours away, and the one trip on this list that’s genuinely inflexible on timing: the little penguins come ashore at dusk, which means a late return no matter how you plan the rest of the day. ⚠ The V/Line bus doesn’t serve the Penguin Parade itself, so this is a car or guided-tour trip only. Tickets run around AUD $33 and sell out, book ahead rather than turning up.
Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy: the easiest trip here
About an hour out and ⚠ reachable by Metro train to Belgrave, no car needed. The heritage Puffing Billy steam train is the headline, and the forested ranges around Sassafras and Olinda are cooler and quieter than the city on a hot day.
Mornington Peninsula: hot springs, not the bathing boxes
About 1-1.5 hours away, workable as a day trip or a Sorrento/Portsea overnight if you want to linger. Peninsula Hot Springs and the wineries are the draw. ⚠ The colorful Brighton bathing boxes are in Melbourne’s own bayside, not out on the peninsula, don’t plan a special trip out here expecting to see them.
Ballarat and Sovereign Hill: the gold rush by train
About 1.5 hours away, and V/Line trains genuinely work for this one if you’d rather not drive. Sovereign Hill recreates an 1850s gold-rush town as an open-air museum, complete with a daily gold pour.
Grampians (Gariwerd): worth an overnight, not a day
At 2.5-3 hours, this is too far for a comfortable day trip. An overnight in Halls Gap is the honest way to see it properly rather than spending most of the day in the car.
Shorter options if you want something closer
Werribee Open Range Zoo is the closest at roughly 30 minutes. Bendigo and Geelong both work by V/Line train for a lighter day. Wilsons Prom rewards a proper 3-day visit rather than a rushed day trip, and it’s car or tour only.
