Melbourne: Events Calendar for a Base Trip

Melbourne’s calendar is built around sport more than any other Australian city, and if you’re planning a base-and-day-trips trip, these dates matter for two reasons: hotel prices spike, and your day-trip timing might need to shift around them.
Australian Open, January
Melbourne Park hosts the Australian Open every January, always the same month regardless of the calendar year. It’s peak summer in Melbourne when it runs, so pack for heat even while the rest of the trip planning assumes the city’s famously changeable weather.
F1 Australian Grand Prix, around March
Albert Park hosts the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, expected around 6-8 March 2026. Accommodation in the CBD and Southbank tightens up for race week specifically, book well ahead if your dates overlap.
Melbourne International Comedy Festival, March-April
The Comedy Festival runs across venues citywide through March into April, and it’s one of the reasons the CBD stays busy through the shoulder season rather than quieting down after the F1 crowd leaves.
AFL season, March-September, Grand Final 26 September 2026
The AFL season runs March through September at the MCG and Marvel Stadium, and ⚠ the 2026 Grand Final is confirmed for Saturday 26 September. If a match lines up with your trip, this is genuinely one of the best ways to feel the city’s sporting identity rather than just touring an empty stadium.
Melbourne Cup, Tuesday 3 November 2026
The Melbourne Cup at Flemington, “the race that stops a nation,” runs the first Tuesday of November, confirmed for 3 November 2026. ⚠ It’s a public holiday in metro Melbourne only, not nationally, a detail that trips up a lot of visitors expecting the whole country to shut down.
How this affects your day trips
Event weeks push hotel prices up across the CBD and Southbank, which is also where most day-trip tours and trains depart from, so book both your bed and your day trip further ahead than you would in a quiet week. The AFL Grand Final weekend and Melbourne Cup week are the two biggest spikes; if your day-trip dates are flexible, shifting the Great Ocean Road or Yarra Valley trip a few days either side of these dates can mean an easier tour booking and a cheaper room.
Seasonal planning beyond the fixed dates
⚠ Australian seasons are flipped, summer runs December-February, and Melbourne is famous for “four seasons in one day” regardless of which month you land in. Spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) are the best stretches for both the city and the day trips, cooler for walking the laneways and clearer for the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians alike.
